Position Overview

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled Nuclear Engineer to contribute to our Isotopes Program. This role involves a range of responsibilities focused on the design, analysis, and development of components for nuclear applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and analyze components used in nuclear applications, including reactor fuel and radiation shielding.
  • Conduct research and develop analytical methods that support the nuclear fuel cycle, including the safe storage and disposal of nuclear waste.
  • Engage in nuclear regulatory work, including risk-informed analysis and probabilistic risk assessments.
  • Address safety needs related to nuclear construction, operation, and decommissioning processes.
  • Develop and apply knowledge of radioactive materials and isotopes, studying their interactions with various materials.
  • Evaluate health hazards to ensure the safe use of ionizing radiation.
  • Investigate the principles of radiation interaction with matter and biological systems.
  • Study environmental radioactivity levels and their biological effects.
  • Utilize expertise in radiation physics, health physics, and computational modeling to minimize radiation exposure in compliance with regulations.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in nuclear or chemical engineering with experience in radiological research.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with radiological materials.
  • Experience in chemical process separations for nuclear applications.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software such as Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, and others.
  • Knowledge of solution chemistry and separation strategies for various radioisotopes.
  • Experience with laboratory hardware design and experimental apparatus setup.
  • Proven track record of preparing scientific articles and technical reports.

Working Environment:

  • This position will be conducted in a controlled laboratory environment.
  • Candidate must adhere to Radiation Worker standards and safety protocols.
  • Occasional off-shift work may be required.

Additional Information:

Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required. The selected candidate will undergo pre-employment and random drug testing as part of the hiring process.
