Position Overview

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled professional to join our team as a Nuclear Engineer focused on Isotopes Program. This role involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at advancing nuclear technology and ensuring safety in nuclear applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop components for nuclear applications, including reactor fuel and radiation shielding.
  • Conduct research on analytical methods supporting the nuclear fuel cycle, including storage and disposal of radioactive waste.
  • Engage in nuclear regulatory analysis and risk assessment to support safety protocols.
  • Address safety requirements in nuclear construction, operation, and decommissioning processes.
  • Apply knowledge of radioactive materials and isotopes to study their interactions with various materials.
  • Evaluate health hazards associated with ionizing radiation to ensure safe usage.
  • Investigate the principles of radiation interaction with matter and biological systems.
  • Assess environmental radioactivity levels and their biological impacts.
  • Utilize expertise in radiation physics and health physics to minimize exposure risks in compliance with regulations.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with 7+ years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in nuclear or chemical engineering with extensive experience in radiological research.
  • Strong communication skills and experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with radiological materials.
  • Experience in chemical process separations for nuclear applications.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software such as Microsoft Excel and familiarity with MATLAB or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of solution chemistry and separation strategies for various radioisotopes.
  • Experience in designing laboratory experiments and interpreting data.
  • Proven track record of producing high-quality scientific publications and proposals.

Working Environment:

This position will be based in a controlled laboratory environment, requiring adherence to safety standards for handling radioactive materials. The role may involve occasional off-hours work.

Additional Information:

Due to the nature of the work, U.S. Citizenship is required. The selected candidate will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
