Job Title: Deputy Photo Manager

The New York Times is seeking a highly skilled Deputy Photo Manager to join our team. As a key member of our photo department, you will be responsible for overseeing the production of high-quality visual content for our magazine and website.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of photo editors and researchers to produce editorial photoshoots, including studios, set builds, hair and makeup, location scouting, casting, and wardrobe.
  • Supervise the budgeting, contracts, and invoicing for multiple stories.
  • Work closely with the Photo Director to produce photo shoots for all sections of the magazine and website, including fashion, interiors, travel, and still lifes.
  • Source freelance photographers, producers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, set builders, prop designers, location scouts, casting agents, animal handlers, and fabricators for photo shoots.
  • Negotiate fees with vendors such as studios, photo labs, and photo agencies.
  • Process and approve invoices for photo shoots in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the editorial and design teams to produce multimedia features.
  • Mentor junior members of the photo department and identify new talent.
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of experience producing creative photography, including fashion, interiors, travel, and still lifes.
  • Proven ability to work well with top editors, writers, designers, and photo editors.
  • Knowledge of journalistic ethics, standards, and practices.
  • Strong network of creatives working in the fields of art, photography, and video.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working across multiple platforms, including photography, video, multimedia, and social media.
  • Ability to manage a team and advise junior staff editors.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed.
