Key Responsibilities

  • Acts as a proficient leader within a wildland fire module or crew, executing essential fire management operations including preparedness, fuels management, prevention, and suppression.
  • Utilizes knowledge of firefighter safety protocols, fire dynamics, local topography, weather conditions, and fuel types to inform fire management strategies.
  • Develops action plans and oversees the deployment of fire line resources effectively.
  • Directs fire suppression efforts and recommends tactical approaches during fire incidents.
  • Oversees fuels management projects, including prescribed burns, mechanical treatments, and the management of vegetation debris.
  • Collects and analyzes data on weather patterns, terrain, fuel types, and fire behavior to support response efforts during wildland fire events.
  • Manages the operation and maintenance of specialized tools and equipment, ensuring all necessary supplies are available for fire assignments.
  • Supervises a small team of firefighters in constructing firelines, conducting burnout operations, and patrolling firelines.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as timekeeping, travel arrangements, credit card management, record maintenance, and training of firefighters.

Qualifications

This role is classified as a Senior Firefighter (SFF) under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. Candidates must meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to appointment.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • GS-7: Requires 1 year of specialized wildland fire experience equivalent to the GS-6 level, including leading fire control, prevention, or suppression efforts.
  • GS-6: Requires 1 year of specialized wildland fire experience equivalent to the GS-5 level, including senior roles in fire control and management of fire tools and equipment.

Selective Placement Factors:

  • Primary Core Requirement: Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) or higher.
  • Additional Required Training: S-290, Intermediate Fire Behavior.

Maximum Entry Age and Retirement Coverage:

This position falls under special retirement provisions for Federal Firefighters, with a maximum entry age of 37 unless prior covered service is documented. Applicants must be at least 18 years old but not exceed the maximum entry age by the closing date of this announcement.

Physical Demands:

The role requires rigorous physical exertion, including running, climbing, and lifting heavy objects, often in challenging environments.

Work Environment:

Employees will work in diverse terrains, including forests and deserts, often under extreme weather conditions, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.
