Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Patient Access Representative to join our team at Stony Brook Medicine. As a key member of our Revenue Cycle team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of patients through our facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and support activities to ensure excellence in patient throughput, including same-day admissions, urgent, emergency, and transfers.
  • Review and ensure correct coding of patient types and medical services to support billing and revenue cycle goals.
  • Follow appropriate patient placement utilizing the facilities' bed allocation.
  • Determine eligibility and patient cost share using electronic systems and other means, taking payments at point of service.
  • Communicate with patients and their representatives to confirm payment arrangements and provide financial guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations, including securing consents and regulatory signatures from patients or designees.
  • Provide financial counseling and assistance to patients and their representatives, including information about health care insurance coverage and cost share responsibilities.
  • Assist and instruct staff on issues related to insurance verification, authorizations, and referrals.
  • Collect co-pays, deposits, and deductibles at time of registration/admission.
  • Monitor staff productivity and provide constructive feedback to staff with management guidance.
  • Train and in-service new and continuing employees on a continuing basis.
Requirements
  • Associate's Degree with one year working experience in a financial services, public health, health, or related industry.
  • Or, two years of demonstrated excellence working in a financial services, public health, health, or related industry, with comparable complex skill experience in payment collection, insurance reimbursement, access services, etc.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, computing, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Experience and expertise in speaking with customers and working well with persons who are under stress.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Billing experience, accounts receivable, banking, hospital patient access/registration experience, familiarity with medical insurance benefits, bed control management, and demonstrated experience with EMR computerized registration/financial/IT systems.
