About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As an Ocean Systems Mechanical Engineer, you will play a critical role in the design, development, and testing of advanced maritime systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development: Work with a diverse team to design mechanical parts and assemblies using computer-aided design (CAD) programs such as SolidWorks. Utilize modeling, simulation, and finite element analysis (FEA) software as needed to support system design. Generate design images and provide documentation.
  • Project Management: Support, lead, and manage projects with mechanical design, fabrication, assembly, integration, and trouble-shooting techniques on a variety of electro-mechanical systems for maritime applications.
  • Research and Development: Assist in the brainstorming and development of new initiatives/concepts in maritime applications through research and development (R&D) efforts. Conceptualize components and assemblies, and generate formal design drawings and documentation using SolidWorks and other software tools.
  • Testing and Evaluation: Develop project plans and test plans, and conduct land/ocean-based field tests/demonstrations of advanced sensor systems to ensure that program objectives are satisfactorily addressed through simulation, subsystem integration testing, and full system testing.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with multiple DoD system partners to evaluate current designs, identify risks, and develop solutions to address those risks.
Requirements
  • Education: Hold a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field with 5+ years of demonstrated relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience: Have demonstrated experience with the design, development, testing, and deployment of electro-mechanical systems, from initial concepts through fabrication and bench/field tests.
  • Skills: Show proven ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, and possess strong interpersonal, speaking, and technical writing skills to communicate effectively with staff and management at all levels.
  • Clearance: Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Education: Hold a Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Specialized Experience: 5+ years of proven experience with design, development, deployment, and test of moored and towed underwater systems, buoys, towed arrays, UUV, and ROVs.
  • Expertise: Have expertise with shipboard systems, hydraulics, pressure vessels, cranes, winches, and reels.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics: Are skilled in computational fluid dynamics for underwater system design.
  • Acoustic and Non-Acoustic Sensor Systems: Have experience with development and testing of acoustic and non-acoustic sensor systems.
