Maryland City, Maryland, United States Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory Full time

Are you eager to leverage your systems engineering expertise to shape the future of our national defense architecture in the realm of space?

Do you thrive on devising innovative solutions to intricate challenges?

Are you a comprehensive systems thinker with experience in kill chain execution, analysis, design, or evaluation, prepared to tackle the pressing issues facing the Space Force?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

We are in search of a methodical and detail-oriented technical professional to showcase their systems and systems-of-systems perspective in support of multidisciplinary teams. This domain involves engineering a series of asset functions to effectively deploy capabilities against adversarial threats. Some of the friendly assets may be in space, and the threats could also originate from there, depending on the specific kill chain context. This position necessitates effective communication and coordination among systems to monitor, identify, and neutralize potential threats. You will be part of a diverse group of dedicated engineers, software developers, data scientists, and analysts committed to enhancing the state of the art in space-based defense systems. We prioritize building diverse teams, continuously improving our capabilities, and fostering a work environment that champions innovation, integrity, trust, and collaboration.

As a member of our team, your responsibilities will include...
  • Collaborating with a team to develop innovative and effective threat kill chains utilizing space-based systems to fulfill the requirements of military and intelligence sectors.
  • Establishing and maintaining traceability between enterprise-level needs and the systems being developed to address them.
  • Employing advanced systems engineering and simulation tools to comprehend system requirements and performance metrics.
  • Drafting system functional and performance specifications.
  • Designing and refining interface messages among federated systems.
  • Overseeing all phases of the project lifecycle to ensure deployed systems meet operational needs.
  • Being accountable for the software implementation of proof-of-concept prototypes across various engineering disciplines.
Qualifications

You meet our essential qualifications for this role if you...
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, statistics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Possess over 10 years of professional experience in systems engineering related to kill chains, weapon systems, or command and control systems.
  • Have demonstrated experience in deriving top-level requirements for a system and breaking them down into lower-level specifications.
  • Exhibit strong analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Have proficiency in higher-level programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Java, or MATLAB).
  • Have participated in teams implementing Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques and effectively communicated technical results to team members, leadership, and government stakeholders.
  • Are a holistic thinker, capable of tracing data flows and operational pathways through a complex, multi-organizational architecture.
  • Are willing to travel up to 10% as necessary.
  • Hold an active Top Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. Eligibility requires U.S. citizenship.
You will exceed our minimum requirements if you possess any of the following...
  • Have an analytical understanding of multiple kill chains involving distributed assets where the target and/or assets are in space.
  • Active duty military experience related to Planning, Command and Control, Battle Management, Fires, or Intelligence.
  • A Master's Degree or higher in engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience in a formal technical leadership capacity, guiding a technical team, and developing modeling and simulation systems to evaluate space-based systems and communication networks.
  • Demonstrated experience in testing and evaluating military or intelligence systems.
  • Experience with systems-of-systems physics and effects-based simulation tools (e.g., AFSIM, NGTS).
  • Systems architecting experience using UML/SysML modeling tools with associated software, such as Cameo, Rhapsody, or SPARX EA.
  • Familiarity with modeling frameworks like the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) or Unified Architecture Framework (UAF).
