Maryland City, Maryland, United States Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory Full time

Are you ready to leverage your engineering expertise in a dynamic and collaborative laboratory setting focused on the advancement of innovative maritime technologies?

Do you aspire to tackle some of the most intriguing challenges faced by the US Navy in the underwater domain?

Would you appreciate engaging in impactful, hands-on projects in the field of Maritime Mechanical Engineering with an organization that values innovation, influence, and personal growth?

If this resonates with you, we have an opportunity at APL.

We are in search of a resourceful Mechanical Engineer to become part of the Engineering and Test Group (KME), where we are dedicated to enhancing technological capabilities for Navy operations through the development and assessment of advanced sensor systems and intricate electro-mechanical systems tailored for maritime and underwater applications. As a vital member of our team, you will play a significant role in essential system development and experimental initiatives. You will join a diverse group committed to fostering an environment of creativity and innovation.

As a Maritime Mechanical Engineer...
  • Your main duty will involve collaborating with a diverse team to design mechanical components and assemblies utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks. You will employ modeling, simulation, and finite element analysis (FEA) tools as necessary to support system design. Generate design visuals and prepare documentation. Collaborate with fabrication personnel and other specialists to strategize and oversee fabrication and assembly design. Analyze and evaluate systems intended for maritime environments.
  • You will manage and lead projects encompassing mechanical design, fabrication, assembly, integration, and troubleshooting techniques on various electro-mechanical systems for maritime applications, whether in the laboratory or on field projects, while working independently or as part of a project team.
  • You will contribute to the ideation and development of new initiatives and concepts in maritime applications through research and development (R&D) efforts, including conceptualizing components and assemblies, as well as producing formal design drawings and documentation using SolidWorks and other software tools.
  • You will formulate project plans and testing protocols, conducting land/ocean-based field tests and demonstrations of advanced sensor systems to ensure that program objectives are effectively met through simulation, subsystem integration testing, and comprehensive system testing. Prepare test reports, design briefs, test plans, and reports for upper management and stakeholders.
  • You will assist in at-sea testing by performing ship checks, planning for the deployment and recovery of systems, coordinating field test hardware and logistics, and maintaining and installing winches, cranes, and other electro-mechanical equipment. Lead back-deck operations as needed.
  • You will collaborate with multiple Department of Defense system partners to assess current designs, identify potential risks, and devise solutions to mitigate those risks.
Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the role if you...
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field with over 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Have proven experience in the design, development, testing, and deployment of electro-mechanical systems, from initial concepts through fabrication and testing, along with hands-on experience in the design, development, deployment, operations, and testing of ocean systems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, possessing strong interpersonal, verbal, and technical writing skills to communicate effectively with staff and management at all levels.
  • Are proficient with engineering software packages for design and finite element analysis, such as SolidWorks and Matlab.
  • Can obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately achieve a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will undergo a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You will exceed our minimum requirements if you...
  • Hold a Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related technical field.
  • Have over 5 years of demonstrated experience in the design, development, deployment, and testing of moored and towed underwater systems, buoys, towed arrays, UUVs, and ROVs.
  • Possess expertise in shipboard systems, including hydraulics, pressure vessels, cranes, winches, and reels.
  • Are skilled in computational fluid dynamics for underwater system design.
  • Have experience in the development and testing of acoustic and non-acoustic sensor systems.
