Job Title: Social Emotional Learning Advocate

Job Summary:

The Social Emotional Learning Advocate (SELA) plays a vital role in supporting the social and emotional development of students in the Medford School District. This position requires a strong understanding of social emotional learning principles and the ability to provide consultation, coaching, and modeling to school personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide consultation, coaching, and modeling to school personnel on effective classroom and student management strategies.
  • Develop and implement individual student success plans in collaboration with students, families, teachers, and administrators.
  • Supervise support staff and provide professional development as directed by the Principal and Student Wellness Coordinator.
  • Develop and implement instruction related to pro-social behavior, social and emotional learning for Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 school-wide and individual student supports.
  • Observe students and collect data on behavior and assessment of social-emotional learning programs.
  • Provide crisis support to school personnel, including assistance with writing, implementing, and monitoring risk assessments and safety plans.
  • Collaborate with the Response to Intervention (RTI) team for the pre-referral and referral for evaluation for Special Education.
  • Develop and conduct professional development as directed by the building principal and Student Wellness Coordinator.
  • Provide daily supervision to support staff, including training, coaching, and oversight of the implementation of assignments in support of the overall student support services for their building.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or Special Education, Applied Behavioral Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, mental health, or related fields.
  • Successful experiences working with students who have challenging behavior, social and emotional needs.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, members of the community, students, and others, including local law enforcement.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who are fluent in both English and Spanish.

Work Environment:

The work environment is typically low to moderate noise level, with occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions, and temperature fluctuations.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this position include regular talking and hearing, frequent walking, sitting, using hands for fine manipulation, handling or feeling, and reaching with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
