Childcare Support Specialist

Position Overview

The Childcare Support Specialist plays a crucial role in designing and executing engaging activities tailored to the developmental stages of children, ensuring a secure and sociable environment. This position provides essential assistance to the Child Care Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

1. Familiarize yourself with daily operational protocols and assist in completing routine tasks (attendance tracking, message management, snack protocols, activity planning, child guidance, executing activities, cleaning, and other daily program functions).

2. Encourage children’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth; ensure that the program space is safe, tidy, and conducive to both active and quiet activities.

3. Foster positive interactions with children consistently; warmly welcome parents and children each day.

4. Deliver the program within a nurturing environment that prioritizes safety, support, and care, aligning with the objectives of the Child Care Program.

5. Cultivate an atmosphere that accommodates a variety of activities and interests; uphold school policies and site regulations while employing positive strategies to guide children's behavior.

6. Review weekly meeting notes and maintain the communication log.

7. Ensure compliance with YWCA Child Care Program licensing; adhere to all state licensing standards and training requirements, Department of Public Instruction Guidelines, and Young Star criteria.

8. Assist in organizing and maintaining the site storage area to keep it orderly.

9. Contribute to the lesson planning process.

10. Help coordinate two parent engagement events annually (such as open houses, conferences, talent shows, etc.).

11. Attend assigned staff, departmental, and YWCA meetings.

12. Stay informed about YWCA goals, mission, and programs.

13. Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

- High School Diploma or equivalent; advanced education in child development is preferred.

- 1-3 years of experience working with children.

- Completion of 10 hours of training in the care of school-age children or equivalent, as approved by Wisconsin DPI; or willingness to complete at least 10 hours of training within 6 months of hire.

- Current CPR and AED certification.

- Ability to create a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment for children.

- Detail-oriented with strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

- Capacity to foster a collaborative approach with staff, volunteers, and community partners.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; enthusiastic, approachable, and warm.

- Experience working with diverse populations.

- Sound judgment in decision-making. Capable of making collaborative decisions that benefit the YWCA.

Work Schedule

Split morning and afternoon shifts. Primarily daytime hours with occasional evenings and weekends as needed, including on-call duties.

Compensation

NON-EXEMPT, Part-time with benefits for 20 or more hours per week.

Definition

The Child Care Support Specialist operates under the direct supervision of the Child Care Site Supervisor, the Program Director, and/or the Assistant Program Director, providing essential support to the Child Care Supervisor.

Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old and have completed 10 hours of training in the care of school-age children or equivalent, as approved by Wisconsin DPI; or be willing to complete at least 10 hours of training within 3 months of hire, or be 17 years old and have completed a childcare class. CPR and AED certification is required within 3 months of hire.
