Position Overview

Role: Histotechnologist II

Department: Laboratory Surgical-Autopsy Pathology

Location: Phoenix

This role is essential in executing a variety of intricate histological tasks and immunohistochemical evaluations, alongside advanced genetic and molecular testing, adhering to established protocols and laboratory methodologies. The position operates under the general oversight of the department supervisor and does not entail supervisory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conducts standard histology tasks autonomously, including small tissue grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine H&E staining, and coverslipping.
  2. Performs sophisticated histology tasks independently, such as special stains, histochemical stains, and immunohistochemical stains.
  3. Executes highly complex histology procedures independently, including IHC antibody titration, optimization, protocol troubleshooting, and histochemical test development.
  4. Undertakes advanced histology functions independently, including immunofluorescent staining and molecular genetic antibody testing, such as in situ hybridization (ISH) with chromogenic (CISH), fluorescent (FISH), and silver (SISH) techniques.
  5. Maintains laboratory instruments according to prescribed guidelines, identifying and resolving malfunctions to ensure optimal and safe operations.
  6. Engages in the assessment and/or creation of new procedures, instruments, assays, and quality enhancement initiatives. Actively reviews practices and contributes to the implementation of improvements to enhance method effectiveness. Monitors quality control performance and documentation.
  7. Prepares and delivers patient case slides and reports to pathologists.
  8. Organizes and preserves storage of tissue blocks, glass slides, and tissue controls.
  9. Maintains professional and technical proficiency by continuously seeking knowledge and self-improvement, staying updated with current literature, practices, and advancements in histology. This includes participating in continuing education to uphold certification.
  10. Performs additional job-related tasks as required.
