JOB DESCRIPTION: Food Service Assistant I

Purpose Statement:

The role of Food Service Assistant I is essential for the preparation and distribution of food items intended for students and school staff, while ensuring that facilities are maintained in a hygienic state.

Individuals in this position are responsible for providing clean and sanitary environments that directly support educational activities. This position reports to the Director of Food Services.
Essential Functions:
  • Organizes food and beverage items (e.g., arranging in serving areas, displaying, replenishing supplies, etc.) to ensure availability for students and staff.
  • Sanitizes utensils, equipment, and food preparation and serving areas to uphold health standards.
  • Processes payments for food items (e.g., cash, meal program offsets, etc.) to secure funds for the items selected.
  • Evaluates food items and supplies to confirm quantities and specifications of orders while adhering to health regulations.
  • Prepares carts to guarantee that food and beverage items are ready for delivery to various locations.
  • Supervises student workers to provide guidance in their responsibilities.
  • Compiles daily item counts and related reports to document items served.
  • Prepares food and beverage items to fulfill nutritional requirements and projected meal plans.
  • Balances cash transactions and item counts to maintain accurate financial and inventory records.
  • Addresses inquiries from students, staff, and the public to provide information regarding meal options and pricing.
  • Serves food items to meet nutritional standards and requests from students and school personnel.
  • Restocks food, condiments, and supplies (e.g., checking expiration dates) to ensure adequate inventory levels.
  • Delivers food items, supplies, and equipment to various school cafeterias and off-campus locations in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the preparation of food items (e.g., main dishes, salads, fruits, sandwiches, desserts, etc.) to meet nutritional standards.
  • Collaborates with other staff as needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

SKILLS: Required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to adapt to changing job conditions.

Specific skills necessary for satisfactory performance include adherence to safety protocols, operation of equipment used in large-scale food preparation, and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE: Required to perform basic mathematical calculations, follow instructions, and comprehend multi-step written and oral directives.

Specific knowledge necessary includes health standards and hazards, large-scale cooking, cash handling, and safety practices.

ABILITY: Required to schedule activities, compile data, and utilize basic job-related equipment.

Flexibility is essential to work collaboratively with others in various situations, process data using defined methods, and operate equipment according to established procedures.

Ability to engage with a diverse range of individuals and manage specific job-related data and equipment is also required.


Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices and methods, providing information and advising others, and operating within a defined budget.

Utilization of resources from other work units may be necessary to perform job functions, with ongoing opportunities to impact the organization’s services.


Working Environment:

The typical methods of performing job functions require the following physical demands:

Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and considerable fine motor skills.

Generally, the job involves minimal sitting, with approximately 50% walking and 50% standing. The role is performed under conditions that may include temperature extremes and some hazardous situations.


Experience:

Job-related experience is preferred.


Education:

High School diploma or equivalent.


Required Testing:

As required for the position.


Certificates & Licenses:

Food Handler's Certificate.


Clearances:

Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance; TB Clearance.
