About the Role: Real Estate Development Senior Counsel

The Real Estate Development Senior Counsel will provide legal services in support of new store development, permitting, construction, and lease administration. Key responsibilities include:

  • Lease Administration
    • Prepare and negotiate new leases, lease amendments, and related documentation.
    • Oversee preparation of documents needed in the ordinary course of lease administration.
  • Due Diligence
    • Lead the due diligence process for new locations.
  • Vendor Contracts
    • Prepare and negotiate vendor contracts as it pertains to the construction of new units.
  • Real Estate Transactions
    • Provide advice and counsel to support enterprise-wide lease administration, new unit development, and construction efforts.
    • Ensure that standard forms of real estate legal documents are updated as necessary/desirable to reflect current best practices.
  • General Corporate Matters
    • Provide legal support with general corporate/miscellaneous matters as needed.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Licensed (in good standing) to practice law in the United States, preferably in the State of North Carolina.
  • Six (6) or more years of practice in a law firm or corporation representing public and/or private companies with respect to complex commercial real estate transactions. Multi-unit retail experience preferred. Law firm experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of, and competence in advising clients with respect to, commercial real estate transactions, with emphasis on retail leasing especially ground lease and build-to-suit transactions.
  • Experience running a real estate deal from start to finish without much supervision.
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting, and clearly communicating legal strategies and requirements to/for non-lawyer colleagues.
  • Experience working effectively within a team of legal and non-legal professionals.
  • Commercial leasing experience with regard to retail/service tenants preferred.
