Orthoptic Care Coordinator

The University of Iowa Health Care, within the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, is in search of a dedicated Orthoptist (Ophthalmic Professional II; PK80) to function as a clinical and technical authority in orthoptics. The Orthoptist will engage in direct patient interactions by conducting sensorimotor assessments, diagnosing and managing eye movement disorders, and addressing binocular vision issues. This role includes participation in the assessment and treatment of conditions such as amblyopia, diplopia, genetic eye disorders, and both pediatric and adult strabismus. Additionally, the Orthoptist will play a vital role in the education and coordination of fellows, residents, orthoptic students, and physicians who rotate through the department, as well as contribute to clinical research focused on eye movement disorders and related conditions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients, including visual acuity tests, refraction, and sensorimotor examinations. Document findings with precision and consult with physicians as necessary. Develop tailored treatment plans for patients experiencing eye movement and binocular vision challenges.
  • Communication: Maintain clear communication with patients and healthcare team members, ensuring that all messages and responsibilities are addressed promptly.
  • Leadership: Act as a role model in patient care, propose enhancements in clinical practices, and assist in the maintenance and prioritization of equipment needs.
  • Education: Facilitate the orientation and training of new technical staff, and contribute to the education of orthoptic students and residents in clinical practices.
  • Research Participation: Engage in multi-center and grant-funded research projects, ensuring adherence to protocols and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

Work Schedule: Full-time position with a preferred schedule of Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Flexibility in scheduling may be accommodated based on clinic needs.


Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • National certification from the American Orthoptic Council as an Orthoptist or the ability to obtain certification within three months of hire.
  • 1-3 years of clinical experience working alongside an Ophthalmologist.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in research involving both adult and pediatric populations.
