Classification Specialist Job Overview

The Global Trade Compliance (GTC) team plays a crucial role in identifying and implementing trade compliance requirements and processes. This includes executing essential trade compliance functions that are best handled on a global or cross-divisional basis.

One of the primary responsibilities of GTC is to oversee adherence to classification standards set by the organization.

The Classification Specialist is tasked with ensuring accurate product-level classifications and addressing classification-related inquiries and challenges as needed.

This role requires effective collaboration within GTC and across various departments to uphold compliance with organizational standards.


Key Responsibilities:


1. Classify a range of items (including chemicals, biologics, laboratory supplies, finished pharmaceuticals, and equipment) with precise Harmonized Tariff classifications (HTS), Export Control Numbers (ECN/ECCN), Controlled Substance Schedules, and other relevant classifications based on product characteristics.
2. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to gather necessary information or utilize source systems to ensure correct item classification.
3. Conduct research on classification resources, complex rulings, and legal decisions to aid in the classification process.
4. Provide necessary background information to secure classification rulings when required.
5. Maintain classification records in the organization’s trade management systems and databases, such as SAP GTS and One Source.
6. Document 'reasonable care' in relevant systems to support the classifications made.
7. Offer guidance on special tariff provisions, such as the 9817 prototype provision for imports.

8. Collaborate with global trade management systems like SAP GTS and One Source to ensure the integrity of master classification data and processes.
9. Provide classification expertise to assist in trade compliance audits.
10. Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal standards and procedures related to classification.


Position Requirements:

Location/Commute:
This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, combining in-office and remote work. The role is based at the company's headquarters or another designated site, with occasional travel as necessary.


Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in a scientific field or equivalent experience is required.

Essential Experience and Skills:
1. Strong understanding of chemical and biological product attributes.
2. Experience or capability to work with global trade management systems like SAP GTS or One Source.
3. Excellent communication and writing abilities.
4. Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Consistent high performance.
6. Awareness of diversity and inclusion.


Preferred Experience and Skills:
1. Previous experience in tariff classification is preferred.
2. Functional expertise in international trade or related fields is advantageous.
