Family-Based Support Carer

Job Opportunity
Are you interested in becoming a self-employed Intensive Support Service (ISS) foster carer? This role involves providing exceptional care to children and young individuals within your own residence. We encourage applications from both individuals and couples.
The ISS is designed to offer a familial alternative to institutional care for children and young people aged 5 to 18 who exhibit challenging behaviors or pose risks to themselves or others. Many of these children may have faced numerous transitions within the care system, including both residential and foster care. Their behaviors can be complex and demanding, requiring a caregiver who possesses understanding and patience. These children need a structured, nurturing environment with clear boundaries to help them thrive.
As a self-employed ISS foster carer, you will deliver safe, high-quality care in line with the standards and principles upheld across Scotland. This role is regulated, and your collaboration with Dumfries & Galloway as a fostering agency will be subject to inspection against the Health and Social Care Standards.
Compensation
ISS foster carers receive a weekly fee of £.75p (over 48 weeks totals £27, per annum), along with an age-related allowance to cater to the needs of the child or young person. As a self-employed individual, you will need to register with HMRC and fulfill National Insurance obligations based on your earnings. Guidance is available from HMRC and the Fostering Network.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must possess:
- Direct experience in caring for children and young people within a residential care environment.
- An SVQ level 3 in health and social care, HNC, or a comparable qualification, or a willingness to pursue this.
- Experience as a foster carer with challenging children/young people aged 8 to 18 or direct experience with vulnerable youth.
- Experience in supporting adolescents as they transition into adulthood through various means such as volunteering, employment, or parenting.
- An understanding of the diverse needs of vulnerable children and young people, including how to handle emergencies.
- The ability to work collaboratively within a professional care team in your home.
- The capacity to provide full-time care for a child or young person, including a dedicated bedroom.
- No children or young individuals under the age of 16 residing in your household.
Caregiver Responsibilities
As an ISS foster carer, you will be expected to:
- Utilize therapeutic parenting techniques to respond to the needs of children/young people.
- Understand the effects of early trauma, poor attachment, and a history of abuse on a child/young person's well-being.
- Deliver a high standard of care that promotes emotional, physical, sexual, and intellectual growth.
- Accept each child/young person as they are, providing individualized care in line with their care plan.
- Collaborate closely with the child/young person's family and other significant individuals in their life.
- Manage behaviors by establishing appropriate boundaries without resorting to physical punishment.
- Exhibit patience, commitment, and resilience, especially during challenging periods.
- Possess knowledge of child development and communicate effectively with children/young people based on their emotional maturity.
- Support children/young people who may not be engaged in full-time education.
Support Provided
As an ISS foster carer, you will receive:
- An assigned supervising social worker.
- Training in various essential and specialized courses.
- Monthly support visits.
- Assistance in attending relevant meetings.
- Access to support groups.
- Newsletters for foster carers.
The Council will ensure that all necessary background checks are conducted in compliance with relevant laws and guidelines, including the Health & Social Care Standards. All information related to disclosures will be handled in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
Individuals who meet the essential criteria are encouraged to submit an application. Please note that further assessment will be required beyond the initial application.
