Intensive Support Service Foster Carer
Job Opportunity
Are you interested in becoming a self-employed Intensive Support Service (ISS) foster carer? This role involves providing exceptional care to children and young individuals in the comfort of your own home. We encourage applications from both individuals and couples.
The ISS program is designed to offer a family-oriented alternative to residential care for children and young people aged 5 to 18 who exhibit challenging behaviors or pose risks to themselves or others. Many of these children may have faced numerous transitions within the care system, including both residential and foster care placements. Their behaviors can be complex and demanding, requiring understanding and patience from caregivers. These children need a structured, nurturing environment with clear boundaries to help them thrive and reach their full potential.
As a self-employed ISS foster carer, you will deliver safe, high-quality care in line with the principles and standards upheld across Scotland. This role is regulated, and your collaboration with Dumfries & Galloway as a fostering agency will be subject to inspections based on Health and Social Care Standards.
Compensation
ISS foster carers receive a competitive fee of £.75 per week (calculated over 48 weeks, totaling £27, per annum), in addition to a weekly age-appropriate allowance to support the needs of the child or young person in your care. As a self-employed individual, you will need to register with HMRC and fulfill National Insurance obligations, which may vary based on your earnings. Guidance is available from HMRC and the Fostering Network.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must possess the following:
- Direct experience in caring for children and young people within a residential care environment.
- An SVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, HNC, or an equivalent qualification, or a willingness to pursue this.
- Experience as a foster carer with challenging children/young people aged 8 to 18, or direct involvement with vulnerable youth.
- Experience working with adolescents and aiding their transition into adulthood through various means.
- A solid understanding of the diverse needs of vulnerable children and young people, along with the ability to manage emergency situations.
- Skills to collaborate effectively as part of a professional care team within your home.
- The capacity to provide full-time care for a child or young person, including a separate bedroom for them.
- No children or young individuals under the age of 16 residing in your household (including family members).
Caregiver Responsibilities
As an ISS foster carer, you will be expected to:
- Utilize therapeutic parenting techniques to respond to the needs of children and young people.
- Understand the effects of early trauma, poor attachment, and a history of abuse on a child's overall health and well-being.
- Provide a high standard of care that promotes emotional, physical, sexual, and intellectual development.
- Accept each child or young person as they are, catering to their individual needs in accordance with their care plan.
- Work closely with the child's family and other significant individuals in their life.
- Manage behavior by establishing appropriate boundaries without resorting to physical punishment or other inappropriate disciplinary measures.
- Exhibit patience, commitment, and resilience, especially during challenging times.
- Possess knowledge of child development and communicate effectively with children and young people based on their emotional maturity.
- Support children or young people who may not be in full-time education.
Support Provided
As an ISS foster carer, you will receive:
- An assigned supervising social worker.
- Training in various essential and specialized courses.
- Monthly support visits.
- Assistance in attending meetings.
- Access to support groups.
- Regular newsletters for carers.
The Council will ensure that all necessary background checks are conducted in compliance with relevant laws and guidelines, including the Health & Social Care Standards. Additionally, all information related to disclosures will be handled in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
We invite prospective ISS foster carers who meet the essential criteria to submit their applications. Please note that further assessment will be required beyond the initial application process.
