Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Communications Manager to oversee and enhance communication strategies within the Department of Engineering Education. Reporting directly to the Head of the Department and the Director of Communications and Marketing, this role is essential in aligning departmental initiatives with the broader objectives of the college and university.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Manager will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive annual communication plan in collaboration with department leadership.
  • Producing and editing newsletters and stories that showcase departmental research and achievements.
  • Managing the department's social media presence and website, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Coordinating digital and print communications, including photography and videography.
  • Participating in recruitment efforts for graduate students and faculty.
  • Engaging in departmental and college events to promote initiatives and achievements.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong written communication skills, including proficiency in editing and copywriting.
  • Experience in interviewing and gathering information from subject matter experts.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A Master's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with a creative and flexible approach.
  • Familiarity with digital content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Experience in developing promotional materials and visual communication.
  • The ability to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed.

Compensation

The position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $24 to $28, commensurate with experience.

Additional Information

This role supports a hybrid work schedule, requiring in-office presence for specific events. Candidates will undergo a criminal conviction check as part of the hiring process. A portfolio showcasing graphic design work, writing samples, or web design examples is required with the application.
