Position Overview

The Surgical Technology Intern operates under the guidance of registered nursing staff and medical professionals to support the execution of safe and efficient surgical operations. This role is designed for students in surgical technology programs, focusing on maintaining a secure operating room atmosphere, ensuring the functionality of equipment, and assisting in surgical procedures that prioritize patient safety. A surgical technology intern is knowledgeable in sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, surgical processes, and the use of tools and technologies that aid physicians in performing invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare the operating room in collaboration with other team members, adhering to protocols for disinfecting surfaces and equipment; select and organize necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies tailored to specific surgical operations. Under the supervision of a registered nurse or surgical technologist, apply proper sterile techniques and establish a sterile field in accordance with established protocols for each surgical procedure, including both routine and specialized interventions.

With the support of the surgical team, implement appropriate sterilization methods for specialized instruments and equipment.

Communicate relevant patient information, including any changes in the patient's condition or observations pertinent to their care, to the registered nurse.

Assist the surgical team in ensuring that all utilized items are accounted for in inventory, appropriately charged, and reported to the case circulator.

Contribute to maintaining a clean work environment. Help prepare the operating room for subsequent procedures by disposing of contaminated linens and waste, cleaning instruments as necessary, and disinfecting equipment. Support the surgical team in managing used equipment.

Assist the surgical team with the replenishment of medical/surgical supplies. Follow proper procedures for acquiring supplies from other departments. Aid the surgical team in gathering necessary supplies for scheduled operations.

Support the surgical team in checking, restocking, and inventorying supplies; verify, rotate, and reprocess dated items. Assist with inventory management and ordering of supplies as directed.

Demonstrate initiative in learning the composition of all surgical trays and specialty items utilized in operating room procedures. Show a willingness to understand the use and maintenance of assigned equipment.

Uphold the confidentiality of patients, staff, and organizational information. Respect patient privacy and maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with patients, visitors, medical personnel, and fellow team members.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not include management responsibilities and will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Technology Program is required.

A letter of recommendation from a Surgical Technology course instructor is preferred.

Required Certifications

BLS certification is mandatory.
