Job Overview

The Certified Surgical Technologist operates under the guidance of registered nursing staff and medical professionals to ensure the smooth and secure execution of both invasive and minimally invasive surgical operations. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe operating room atmosphere, ensuring that all equipment is functioning correctly, and that surgical procedures are performed under optimal conditions for patient safety. A surgical technologist is skilled in sterile and aseptic techniques, combining knowledge of human anatomy, surgical methods, and the use of various tools and technologies to assist physicians in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Required Certifications: National Certification through NBSTSA. Other certifications may be acceptable based on HR Recruitment policy;

Required Training: Completion of an accredited vocational or hospital-based Operating Room Technician program or its equivalent.

Key Responsibilities

Executes assigned patient care tasks under the supervision of a designated Registered Nurse and follows the surgeon's directives for procedure-related tasks. Evaluates and anticipates necessary supplies for scheduled and emergency procedures, ensuring patient comfort and safety, while also anticipating the surgeon's needs to facilitate the procedure. Prepares the operating room in accordance with specific surgical procedures, collaborating with other staff to ensure proper disinfection of equipment and furniture. Maintains strict sterile techniques, organizing and arranging the sterile field according to accepted protocols for each surgical procedure. Efficiently utilizes equipment and supplies, ensuring proper inventory management, including daily checks, restocking, and reordering as necessary. Ensures all utilized items are accurately documented and reported to the circulating nurse. Demonstrates proficiency in handling surgical instruments and possesses knowledge of the procedural steps for specific surgeries. Assists in the documentation of equipment, drug, and environmental checks as mandated by administrative and unit-specific policies. Adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures, demonstrating knowledge of decontamination, packaging, and sterilization processes. Collaborates with the circulating nurse and anesthesia team to position patients on the operating table and prepares the operative site as requested by the surgeon. Under the surgeon's direction, performs tasks such as holding retractors, suctioning, clamping vessels, and applying dressings, acting as a first or second assistant when necessary. After surgery, assists in transferring the patient from the operating table to the stretcher and transporting them to recovery. Aids in preparing the operating room for subsequent procedures, including the proper disposal of contaminated materials and cleaning instruments. Participates in instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure accuracy.

Additional Duties

Works collaboratively with the Associate Care Manager/Registered Nurse to continually update the nursing care plan and suggest interventions to meet patient goals. Reviews and recommends updates to surgeon preference cards, notifying relevant personnel of necessary changes. Labels medications on the surgical field, prepares labels, and verifies specimens according to established protocols. Maintains proper documentation related to sterilization processes and signs off on instrument count sheets. Identifies personal educational needs and participates in peer review as requested. Mentors new staff and students, sharing knowledge to enhance their learning experience. Coordinates treatments and procedures to ensure cost-effective patient care. Collaborates with the appropriate teams for the procurement of necessary supplies and equipment. Demonstrates accountability for the patient care environment, including reporting malfunctioning equipment and maintaining instrumentation. Communicates relevant patient information to the Associate Care Manager/Registered Nurse involved in care. Reviews and acknowledges new policies, procedures, and meeting notes. Answers phone calls with professionalism, manages case postings for surgeons, and relays messages as needed. Acts as a liaison to sterile processing and engages in Performance Improvement initiatives. Contributes to the development and revision of standards and policies as needs arise. Utilizes information from monitors and research to implement changes in practice. Maintains knowledge of emergency protocols for disaster management in the operating room and necessary surgical setups for emergencies. For those with specialized training, the CST may assist as a first/surgical assistant during robotic procedures, ensuring patient safety and addressing any equipment malfunctions. Surgical Technologists in Labor and Delivery may also perform clerical functions, including maintaining patient records and ordering supplies. Performs other duties as assigned.
