Job Overview

The Certified Surgical Technologist operates under the guidance of registered nursing staff and medical professionals to ensure the secure and efficient execution of both invasive and minimally invasive surgical interventions. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe operating room atmosphere, ensuring that all equipment is in optimal working condition, and that surgical procedures are performed in an environment that prioritizes patient safety. A surgical technologist is skilled in the principles and practices of sterile and aseptic techniques, and integrates knowledge of human anatomy, surgical methods, and the use of various tools and technologies to assist physicians in conducting therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Required Certifications: National Certification through NBSTSA. Other certifications may be accepted based on HR policies;

CPR Certification
Required Training: Completion of an accredited vocational or hospital-based Operating Room Technician program or its equivalent

Key Responsibilities

Executes designated patient care tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and follows the surgeon's directives for procedure-related responsibilities. Evaluates and anticipates necessary supplies for both scheduled and emergency procedures, ensuring patient comfort and safety, while also anticipating the surgeon's needs to facilitate the procedure. Prepares the operating room in accordance with specific surgical protocols, collaborating with other staff to adhere to disinfection standards for equipment and furniture. Implements proper sterile techniques, establishing and organizing the sterile field according to accepted protocols for each surgical procedure, whether routine or specialized. Efficiently manages equipment and supplies, ensuring accurate charging and replacement of medical and surgical items. Conducts daily and periodic checks, restocking, and inventory management as required. Ensures all utilized items are accounted for in inventory, charged appropriately, and reported to the circulating nurse. Demonstrates proficiency in handling surgical instruments and possesses a thorough understanding of the procedural steps for specific surgeries. Assists in the documentation and performance of equipment, drug, and environmental checks as mandated by administrative and unit-specific policies. Adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures, demonstrating knowledge of decontamination, packaging, and sterilization of instruments and supplies. Collaborates with the circulating nurse and anesthesia team to position patients correctly on the operating table, prepares the surgical site, and assists in draping as requested by the surgeon. Under the surgeon's guidance, performs tasks such as holding retractors, suctioning, clamping vessels, and applying dressings, acting as a first or second assistant when necessary. After surgery, aids in transferring the patient from the operating table to the stretcher and transporting them to recovery. Assists in preparing the operating room for subsequent procedures, including the proper disposal of contaminated materials and cleaning of instruments. Participates in instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure accuracy.

Additional Duties

Works alongside the Associate Care Manager/Registered Nurse to continuously refine the nursing care plan and suggest interventions to achieve patient objectives. Reviews and updates surgeon preference cards, notifying relevant personnel of necessary changes. Labels medications on the surgical field, prepares labels, and verifies specimens according to established protocols. Maintains accurate documentation related to sterilization processes, signing off on instrument count sheets and preference lists upon completion of cases. Identifies personal educational needs and engages in peer review as requested. Mentors new staff and students, sharing knowledge to enhance their learning experience. Coordinates treatments and procedures to promote cost-effective patient care. Collaborates with relevant personnel for the procurement of necessary supplies and equipment. Takes responsibility for the patient care environment, including reporting malfunctioning equipment and ensuring the maintenance of instruments. Communicates pertinent patient information to the Associate Care Manager/Registered Nurse involved in care. Reviews and acknowledges new policies, procedures, and meeting minutes. Answers phone calls with professionalism, schedules cases for surgeons, and relays messages as needed. Acts as a liaison to sterile processing and engages in Performance Improvement initiatives. Contributes to the development and revision of standards and policies as needs arise. Utilizes information from monitoring and research to implement changes in practice. Maintains knowledge of emergency protocols for potential disasters in the operating room, ensuring readiness for emergency procedures and surgical setups. Surgical Technologists in Labor and Delivery may also perform clerical functions, including maintaining patient records, ordering lab work, transcribing physician orders, and managing supply orders. Performs all other assigned duties as required.
