Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Histology Specialist to join our team at Danbury Hospital. As a Histology Specialist, you will play a critical role in preparing tissue samples for examination by pathologists, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Exceptional Technical Support: Offer high-quality technical and customer service to all customers, meeting the expectations set by the organization.
  • Accurate Specimen Preparation: Perform computer accessioning and proper specimen labeling, ensuring specimen integrity and accuracy.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Assist pathology residents and pathologists as needed in the Frozen Section & Gross Room, communicating effectively and appropriately with coworkers, pathology residents, and pathologists to ensure the quality and integrity of the service.
  • Quality Control and Maintenance: Perform routine histology procedures, including embedding, cutting, mounting, and staining, and initiate work procedures and perform all quality control, instrument maintenance, and documentation required by accrediting agencies.
  • Inventory Management: Assist in maintaining the section's inventory to ensure proper levels of reagents, controls, and disposables.
  • Training and Development: Participate in the Laboratory Performance Improvement Program and teach and train new employees, students, and pathology residents.
  • Compliance and Safety: Fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position and maintain a safe environment for oneself and coworkers, complying with all regulatory agencies and hospital and laboratory safety programs.

Requirements:

  • Education: Associate's degree or equivalent.
  • Experience: One year of experience in histology or a related field.
  • Certification: Histo-technologist certification preferred or eligible.

Working Conditions:

  • Manual Skills: Significant manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity.
  • Occupational Risk: Some occupational risk.
  • Physical Effort: Medium to heavy effort, exerting up to 35 pounds of force.
  • Physical Environment: Some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
