Job Summary

At DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, we are seeking a highly skilled Patient Access Coordinator to join our team. As a key member of our patient access team, you will play a critical role in ensuring seamless patient experiences from appointment scheduling to authorization and billing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • System Navigation: Serve as the primary point of contact for patients and families, providing expert guidance on appointment scheduling, authorizations, and insurance verification.
  • Scheduling and Coordination: Assign patient rooms, reconcile schedules, and follow up with patients to reschedule or coordinate appointments as needed.
  • Insurance and Benefits: Obtain and verify insurance data, including coverage and benefit levels, to ensure accurate and timely authorizations.
  • Authorization and Referrals: Collaborate with physician offices and third-party payors to obtain referrals and authorizations for scheduled and unscheduled services.
  • Financial Liabilities: Thoroughly explain and secure hospital and patient legal forms, including Advance Directives and Consent for Treatment.
  • Payment Processing: Post payments, maintain and reconcile cash drawers, and ensure accurate and timely financial transactions.
  • Departmental Efficiency: Contribute to departmental efficiencies by collaborating with various departments to improve processes and operational excellence.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in patient access team huddles and report on Methods, Equipment, Supplies, and Staffing (MESS) to drive continuous improvement.
  • Continuing Education: Stay up-to-date on payer requirements and third-party regulations under the guidance of department management.
  • Customer Service: Maintain a positive customer service attitude at all times, addressing and resolving patient concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Requirements:
  • Education: High school diploma or associate degree in a related field.
  • Experience: Three or more years of prior work experience in patient access, hospital registration, health insurance, or a related field.
  • Skills: Advanced knowledge of third-party payers' requirements, reimbursements, and copayments/deductible collections.
  • Certifications: Course in medical terminology required.
