Lead Tax Compliance Specialist

Job Overview:
As a Lead Tax Compliance Specialist within the Office of the Vice President for Finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the organization's tax obligations and ensuring adherence to applicable tax regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and oversee tax compliance and reporting processes for federal, state, local, and international tax requirements.
  • Identify and mitigate tax risks while enhancing the financial capacity of the organization to support its global initiatives.
  • Act as a primary resource for tax-related inquiries and issues, providing expert guidance to various departments.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in financial operations, specifically in tax, accounting, or finance.
  • Strong understanding of general taxation principles and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects independently in a dynamic environment with strict deadlines.
  • Excellent customer service skills within an accounting or finance context.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and sound judgment.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred:
  • Two years of dedicated tax experience in a large firm or department, ideally within higher education.
  • Experience in tax compliance for complex organizations and conducting thorough tax research.
  • Familiarity with tax-exempt organization tax returns and partnership tax compliance.
  • Understanding of international tax concepts and tax treaty applications.
  • Experience with financial statement preparation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of higher education budgeting processes and endowment accounting.
