Role of an Aquatic Safety Officer

The Aquatic Safety Officer at the Channel Islands YMCA is responsible for fostering a secure and welcoming environment for all individuals while ensuring safe swimming conditions in the aquatic facilities and surrounding areas, adhering to YMCA guidelines and protocols.
  • Maintain vigilant observation of water and poolside areas through effective scanning techniques
  • Assist swimmers in distress as needed
  • Administer emergency medical assistance as trained to any individual on the YMCA premises
  • Support swim instruction and aquatic program facilitators
  • Conduct and document chemical assessments as required by the branch
  • Understand and operate pool equipment as necessary (e.g., lane dividers, chair lift)
  • Enforce and educate members about aquatic regulations and procedures established by the branch
  • Deliver outstanding customer service and build relationships with members
  • Participate in and successfully complete in-service training sessions
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required for minors
  • Ability to obtain a criminal background clearance, if over 18 years of age
  • Prior experience in a similar role preferred
  • Must successfully complete YMCA swim assessment and pass the entry written examination
  • Hold a basic-level Lifeguarding certification (including Deep Water) from recognized organizations such as Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, YMCA, Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program, Boy Scouts of America, StarGuard ELITE, or United States Lifesaving Association. Ability to transition to Red Cross certification within 90 days.
  • Complete necessary certifications within 30 days of employment
  • Fulfill all required Branch and Position-specific training within two weeks of hire
