Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team at the Channel Islands YMCA. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for creating a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Water Safety and Surveillance: Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by 10-10 scanning, and assist swimmers in distress.
  • Emergency Response: Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premises as necessary.
  • Support to Swim Lessons and Aquatic Programs: Provide support to swim lessons and aquatic programs instructors, and take and record chemical readings set forth by branch.
  • Pool Equipment Operation: Know and operate pool equipment as required, including lane lines and chair lifts.
  • Enforcement of Aquatic Rules and Procedures: Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by branch.
  • Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service and foster connections with members.
  • Training and Development: Participate in and satisfactorily complete in-service trainings.
Requirements
  • Age and Education: Must be at least 16 years old and have a High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor.
  • Certifications and Experience: Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance, if over 18 years of age; previous work experience preferred; must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written test; possess a basic-level Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) certification from one of the following organizations: Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, YMCA, Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training ProgramTM, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), StarGuard ELITE, United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Ability to transition to Red Cross certification within 90 days.
  • Training and Development: Complete required certifications within 30 days of hire, and complete all required Branch and Position specific trainings as required within two weeks of hire.
