United Fire & Casualty is actively seeking a Surety Underwriting Leader who will be responsible for generating a profitable portfolio of both new and existing surety business for our network of agents. This position requires exceptional relationship management skills to support underwriters in producing and underwriting a successful book of surety business through close collaboration with independent agents. Strong analytical abilities will be essential in assessing new opportunities for alignment with company risk criteria. This role plays a pivotal part in establishing company risk guidelines. Frequent travel with primary underwriters to evaluate current and prospective contractors' operations is expected to better understand their capabilities. Additionally, regular agency visits will be made to aid agents in achieving their growth and profitability objectives. As a leader, the Surety Underwriting Leader will enhance the company's reputation and deliver outstanding customer service to all stakeholders, including surety department personnel. This role also involves supporting other managers in the development of underwriters and staff. Advocacy for all surety products, including non-contract surety, is essential. The leader will assist in identifying, establishing, implementing, and monitoring goals, objectives, and strategies for the surety department. Extensive travel, including frequent overnight trips, is a requirement of this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with agencies, visit larger contracting accounts, participate in national and regional meetings, seminars, and evaluate underwriting staff during contractor/agency visits while delivering contingency checks as necessary.
  • Conduct daily reviews of accounts and bid requests that surpass individual underwriter's authority limits.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions and communicate departmental direction and underwriting philosophy.
  • Project regional premiums at least quarterly.
  • Manage expenses for the region in accordance with the surety unit's objectives.
  • Conduct quarterly performance evaluations for direct reports and contribute to those for staff reporting through you.
  • Assist in establishing employee goals, recruit new staff, and address performance issues, including terminations.
  • Support the development of departmental goals, planning, and salary management.
  • Play a key role in quality assurance, portfolio analysis, and compliance. Oversee and conduct monthly audits on new business files and as needed for each underwriter.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, competition, relevant laws, and underwriting practices, and share this knowledge with the team.
  • Ensure that United's surety unit provides industry-leading service.
  • Review and recommend changes to filings for various states, including rates, commissions, rules, and programs.
  • Organize training seminars, encourage staff participation in classes, identify training needs, and assist with professional development for underwriting personnel.
  • Engage in projects aimed at enhancing efficiency, automation, and other departmental or company interests.
  • Visit agents to update them on products, ensure marketing materials align with our objectives, resolve issues, and solicit new agents.
Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably with a focus in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or Accounting.
  • An MBA is preferred.
Certifications/Designations:
  • Ongoing participation in continuing education is expected throughout employees' careers.
  • A valid and current driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • AFSB designation is preferred.
Experience:
  • 15+ years of experience in surety underwriting.
  • Prior management or supervisory experience is preferred.

  • Capability to hire, train, develop, mentor, and cultivate a professional surety team (underwriters, support staff, and others).
Knowledge:
  • A strong understanding of the construction industry is essential, along with a comprehensive understanding of financial statements and overall suretyship.
Working Conditions:
  • General office environment.
  • Up to 20% travel, including overnight stays.
  • Travel may involve visits to agents, principals, and project sites, which could expose the individual to adverse weather conditions and general construction site conditions.
  • Regular work duties may require hours outside of standard business hours.
The salary for this position typically ranges between $157,000 - $230,000, based on potential employee qualifications, operational needs, and other considerations permitted by law. This range may vary above and below the stated amounts.
