Facility Maintenance Specialist

Schedule: 15 hours weekly (Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 8:30am - 1:30 pm)

Under the guidance of the Branch Manager, the Facility Maintenance Specialist is tasked with ensuring a clean, inviting, and secure atmosphere for library visitors. This role involves identifying and reporting any issues related to the main library to the Branch Manager, along with proposing effective solutions. The position requires the use of both power and hand tools to carry out a variety of moderately complex tasks. The Facility Maintenance Specialist will also respond to building emergencies during and after library operating hours.

Key Responsibilities

Establish and uphold a schedule for routine cleaning and general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain the appearance and safety of library facilities and grounds (both public and office areas). This includes, but is not limited to: vacuuming carpets; cleaning and maintaining furniture in public and staff areas; washing glass and counter surfaces; dusting bookshelves; emptying trash receptacles and transporting waste to disposal areas; organizing tables and chairs; sanitizing restrooms and replenishing supplies; collecting debris; damp or dry mopping; assisting staff with furniture and equipment arrangements; supporting staff on special decoration projects; managing inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; and running errands related to custodial responsibilities.

Daily Tasks
  • Clean entrance glass (both inside and outside).
  • Dust mop foyer and circulation area.
  • Vacuum high-traffic carpet areas.
  • Vacuum door mat at the main entrance.
  • Empty trash receptacles.
  • Restroom Duties:
    • Sanitize restroom fixtures, sinks, mirrors, urinals, and toilets.
    • Empty trash bins and clean receptacles.
    • Refill dispensers as necessary in restrooms.
    • Sweep and mop floors.
    • Spot clean walls and partitions.
  • Sweep front porch and entrance from parking area to main door.
  • Sweep front sidewalks along the length of the building.
  • Collect all leaves and trash from sweeping porch, entrance, and sidewalks and bag them.
  • Clean benches on the front porch.
Weekly Tasks
  • Damp mop foyer, circulation area, staff lounge, and meeting room.
  • Dust workstations.
  • Clean sinks, tables, countertops, cabinets, and the exterior of appliances (no dishwashing).
  • Spot clean walls.
  • Clean light switches.
  • Vacuum all carpets.
  • Dust furniture.
  • Dust window sills.
  • Sanitize water fountains.
Monthly Tasks
  • Dust all open shelves.
  • Dust wall clocks.
  • Dust baseboards.
  • Sweep around chiller units, etc.
  • Sweep sidewalks on the sides and rear of the building.
Every 6 Months
  • Clean light fixtures.
  • Wash windows inside and out.
  • Sanitize restroom walls and partitions.
Work Environment
  • Maintain proper attire.
  • Exhibit appropriate conduct with staff and patrons.
Tools and Equipment Utilized

Vacuums, mops, brooms, and various hand tools, ladders, etc.

Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of skills and abilities in using equipment, materials, and supplies for building and grounds maintenance.
  • Familiarity with equipment and supplies necessary for minor repairs. Basic knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily tasks according to established schedules.
  • Capability to lift heavy objects and stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with library staff, suppliers, and service personnel.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
