Senior Heavy Civil Construction Manager

Whitaker Construction, established in 1953, boasts over 70 years of expertise in the heavy civil and underground utility construction sector. As an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) entity, Whitaker has grown to be one of the largest contractors in the intermountain region, employing over 600 individuals and operating nearly 70 crews. Our projects encompass sanitary sewer systems, storm drainage, culinary water supply, irrigation, earthworks, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication installations across several states.
Position Summary:
A Heavy Civil Project Manager plays a crucial role in supervising all facets of the construction process. This includes collaborating with stakeholders to formulate plans, set timelines, and assess labor and material costs. The Project Manager is accountable for ensuring that projects are completed within budget and scope. Key responsibilities include project planning, resource allocation, time management, risk assessment, establishing benchmarks, budget oversight, staff management, and fostering essential relationships with subcontractors, consultants, engineers, and client representatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all project elements, including construction, budget, and cash flow management, ensuring alignment with project contracts and client requirements.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, payment estimates, operational procedures, staffing needs, and equipment resources for timely project delivery.
- Evaluate initial project contracts and associated documents for completeness, addressing specification and scheduling conflicts with clients.
- Document and report all project changes, including change orders and adjustments to work orders.
- Ensure timely ordering and delivery of supplies and equipment.
- Secure necessary permits and licenses for construction activities.
- Monitor and direct construction activities through the on-site Superintendent to ensure adherence to schedules and budgets, addressing any significant issues promptly.
- Allocate and manage resources effectively throughout the construction lifecycle.
- Collaborate with subcontractors, engineers, architects, and project team members.
- Prepare and present monthly forecasts of costs and revenues.
- Conduct weekly safety checks and participate in safety meetings to uphold project safety standards.
- Lead project closeout procedures, ensuring all contract paperwork is finalized and any claims are resolved.
- Additional duties may be assigned by senior management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5-7 years of experience in project management or a similar role, particularly in underground utilities and heavy civil projects.
- Familiarity with commercial construction concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to interpret plans and specifications accurately.
- Detail-oriented with a knack for identifying and rectifying discrepancies.
- Strong work ethic and commitment to project completion.
- Creative problem-solving skills.
- Goal-oriented leadership with effective team management capabilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and construction management software.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements:
- Willingness to work extended hours, including nights and weekends as necessary.
- Able to perform physical tasks such as lifting, standing, and climbing.
- Capable of working in various outdoor conditions.
