General Overview
Conducts a range of routine and advanced tests across one or more laboratory departments. Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of laboratory operations, including the theoretical foundations of testing procedures and adherence to established policies and protocols.
Authorized by the laboratory director to execute testing (and result reporting*) in the clinical laboratory for which they have demonstrated competence.
Operates with minimal supervision in specimen processing, test execution, and result reporting.Key Responsibilities
- Introduces oneself when engaging with patients, families, visitors, or colleagues.
- Completes routine and urgent testing within established timeframes, ensuring accurate results. Makes informed judgments regarding the validity of test outcomes based on quality control data and patient conditions.
- Adapts to increased workload during peak periods while maintaining the quality of results.
- Performs tests independently, showcasing a thorough understanding of departmental protocols and the theoretical basis of testing procedures.
- Maintains comprehensive and accurate logs or documentation, including quality control records, as required by departmental protocols.
- Utilizes autoverification and related technologies to release validated results. Confirms non-autoverified results prior to release and consults with supervisors as needed.
- Identifies critical values and reportable results in accordance with established protocols.
- Communicates critical results appropriately to authorized healthcare providers and documents this action in the laboratory information system.
- Reports and documents quality assurance incidents to the section supervisor and the Laboratory's Quality Manager.
- Understands and performs necessary information system functions for operational efficiency.
- Demonstrates innovative thinking and problem-solving skills, knowing when to seek appropriate guidance.
- Familiarity with the Laboratory Exposure Control Plan, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Program, and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen standards, applying standard precautions in work practices and effectively managing chemical or biological spills.
- Exhibits safe practices in the execution of assigned duties.
- Reports any unsafe practices or conditions to the appropriate responsible parties.
An Associate's Degree is required; a Bachelor's degree with MLS or MT is preferred. Certifications, education, and/or experience must comply with CLIA requirements for moderate and high complexity testing. Experience with instrumentation is preferred.
Licensure/Certification
MLS(ASCP), MT (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), MT(HEW) certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
