Job Summary

Mount Sinai Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse Team Leader to join our Psych Services team. As a key member of our nursing staff, you will be responsible for providing exceptional patient care and leadership to our team of nurses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Initiate and complete initial admission assessments, including education, discharge planning, and care planning within departmental guidelines and time frames.
  • Document findings, continuous assessment, intervention, and patient outcomes according to program procedures.
  • Plan, implement, and coordinate nursing care activities for assigned patients, assuming accountability for completion of delegated tasks during assigned shifts.
  • Maintain precautionary monitoring for identified high-risk patients, reporting and recording patient information regarding patient physical and emotional status.
  • Attempt all alternative measures to avoid patient restraints, both physical and chemical, and use non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Demonstrate therapeutic use of self, recognizing and identifying own feelings and feelings of others, and demonstrating a non-judgmental, empathetic, warm, and respectful attitude.
  • Participate in and facilitate goal-oriented patient and family group activities as appropriate, demonstrating knowledge of basic dynamics of group interaction.
  • Communicate effectively, engaging in goal-directed communication, verbal and non-verbal, and perceiving and interpreting verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Promote surveillance, prevention, and control of infection following hospital and infection control guidelines.
  • Attend and actively participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, conferences, and reviews, and assume responsibility for communication of treatment goals to pertinent nursing staff members.
  • Accurately transcribe and review physician orders, including use of computer systems and programs, following established hospital and unit policies and procedures.
  • Respond to diagnostic data and initiate appropriate action or intervention, reporting all abnormal findings immediately to the physician.
  • Provide and document individualized instructions to patients and significant others regarding plan of care, including discharge plans.
  • Uphold patient rights and adhere to the requirements of the law while caring for Baker Act patients.
  • Perform in a calm, competent, and professional manner during crisis or emergency situations.
  • Promote and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, complying with the unit's safety policy and procedures.
  • Document specific patient valuables on designated forms when received and immediately arrange for appropriate storage.
  • Identify areas needing improvement and actively participate in and promote hospital and department performance improvement initiatives, including data collection, analysis, planning, and implementation.
  • Attend and actively participate in at least 75% of scheduled departmental meetings and in-service programs, providing positive suggestions and input.
  • Make patient assignments based on staff competency and identified patient needs, delegate tasks appropriately, and provide follow-up.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness and quality of nursing care, monitor, and enforce the utilization of proper nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Serve as a resource person and function as a preceptor to new nursing personnel.
  • Take inquiry calls and perform pre-admission clinical assessments, expressing understanding of predominant diagnosis of population served.
  • Seek patient financial clearance for admission as necessary.
  • Present a minimum of 2 in-service and 2 patient conferences.
  • Actively assist in assessing and improving the unit's financial performance, including staffing, reducing length of stay, and supply management.
  • Chair or co-chair unit-based performance improvement committee meetings.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies and support peers and coworkers during stressful events.
  • Participate in assessing clinical competency and compliance of staff.
  • Assist the director with scheduling and assure accuracy of daily schedule sheets.
  • Use a systematic problem-solving process to make sound decisions in a timely manner, including internal and external customer issues.
  • Conduct staff meetings (at least 2 per year) in collaboration with the unit director.
  • Demonstrate expertise necessary to function as a role model for staff.
  • Foster teamwork and build mutual understanding, respect, and confidence among personnel and between departments.
  • Use initiative and sound judgment in delegating responsibilities.
  • Maintain a customer-focused attitude at work through a spirit of cooperation, pleasant and respectful demeanor, and helpfulness towards patients, visitors, physicians, peers, and employees.
  • Demonstrate commitment towards professional growth through development of skills and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of general safety and risk management procedures and respond appropriately to emergency situations, including fire, disaster, and clinical emergencies.
  • Be responsible for providing leadership and direction for staffing in accordance with the organization's goals and objectives and meet changing needs in the area(s) of responsibility.
  • Assume authority, accountability, and responsibility for the formal and informal direction of employees reporting directly to you.
Qualifications
  • Florida RN License
  • ACLS Required
  • BLS Required
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification within 1 year of employment
  • Min 2 years of experience in the area of specialty
