The Access Specialist will be responsible for reviewing medical, psychological, educational, and other relevant documentation to determine students' eligibility for accommodations. They will conduct initial intake interviews with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular and co-curricular environments. The Access Specialist will provide guidance for students on how to initiate and maintain services, such as completing intake forms, requesting accommodations, and scheduling with the Testing Access Center. They will also serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and advisors on all matters related to student accessibility. The Access Specialist will maintain comprehensive records of the accommodation process and interaction with students, faculty, and staff. They will input meeting notes and communications into a database system.

Learning Specialist Program

The Access Specialist will meet with students individually or in groups to provide academic coaching and skill development. They will assess student academic needs and abilities and provide coaching and support to foster independence, self-advocacy, and appropriate college-level skills, such as time management, organization, and effective communication. The Access Specialist will also assist with Student Access Office workshops and conferences presented to faculty, students, and other professionals. They will occasionally assist with the Testing Access Center, as needed, and serve on various VCU committees. The Access Specialist will assist in the development and implementation of programs and perform other duties as assigned by the Director and Associate Director. They will represent the SAEO office at various campus events, occasionally during evening or weekend hours.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

The Access Specialist must have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or a related field. They must have 2+ years of direct experience working with students with disabilities in a higher-ed setting. The Access Specialist must have a working knowledge and/or field experience interpreting and applying the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. They must have experience reading and interpreting psychological, psychiatric, medical, and educational documentation. The Access Specialist must have experience creating presentations and offering training opportunities in both virtual and in-person environments. They must have excellent collaborative skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of professionals from varying backgrounds. The Access Specialist must demonstrate the ability to determine eligibility for reasonable accommodations in an academic setting. They must demonstrate experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards:

The Access Specialist may have a Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a field such as psychology, counseling, special education, vocational rehabilitation, etc. They may have experience working with students with physical, sensory, learning, psychological, and/or other disabilities in a higher education setting."
