Job Title: Lead Engineer - Non-Wires Alternatives

Reports to the Manager of Non-Wires Alternatives

Compensation: The salary range for this role varies based on experience and location, from $101,400 to $126,755.

Position Overview:

The Lead Engineer for Non-Wires Alternatives is tasked with spearheading and collaborating on the design, analysis, execution, maintenance, assessment, measurement, and verification (EM&V) of distributed energy resources (DER) that are integral to the Non-Wires Alternatives (NWA) initiatives. This role also promotes the progression of other significant clean energy projects, such as utility thermal energy networks. Key responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing established distribution criteria and sound engineering practices to pinpoint deficiencies within the distribution system.
  • Collaborating closely with Distribution and Transmission Planning teams to explore, configure scenarios, and execute models that identify suitable NWA technologies to meet system requirements.
  • Recognizing NWA opportunities through the application of appropriate criteria to planned capital projects.
  • Conducting engineering assessments of distribution system requirements and performing technical reviews of NWA proposals. This includes reliability studies, contingency planning, capital budget proposal reviews, net present value economic analyses, and Benefit Cost Analysis (BCA) modeling.
  • Evaluating BCA assessments on potential NWA projects conducted by the team.
  • Supporting NWA contract negotiations and EM&V obligations.
  • Overseeing the development of NWA opportunities and the associated sourcing process, including Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Managing budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for NWA programs.
  • Acting as a liaison between the NWA team and other internal departments to advance NWA projects towards contract execution and implementation.
  • Establishing and nurturing positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies.
  • Assisting during storm restoration efforts.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant technical experience is required.
  • A Master's degree is preferred.

Technical & Functional Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems, DER planning, and system impact analysis, with a strong ability to evaluate NWA project suitability.
  • Proficiency in Power System Studies and the interpretation of study assumptions and results.
  • Experience with Power System Analytics software (e.g., CYME, PSSE, ASPEN).
  • Strong understanding of utility operations and stakeholder engagement, with experience across various functional departments.
  • Demonstrated project management skills in implementing complex initiatives and projects.
  • Experience in advancing competitive procurements, RFPs, RFIs, and contract management.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • A proactive and results-oriented mindset.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements.
