Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Meat Procurement Specialist is accountable for the acquisition, effective inventory management, and rotation of all fresh meat and related products intended for distribution to member retailers.

The role emphasizes enhancing sales of these products to members while ensuring purchases are made at the most competitive prices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual must possess the capability to execute the responsibilities outlined below.

Every employee at Associated Wholesale Grocers is expected to deliver exceptional customer service to our members, thereby supporting their efforts to boost same-store sales and profitability.



  • Place orders via telephone and/or directly with vendor representatives.
  • Engage with members over the phone to take orders, provide current pricing, and negotiate bulk purchases.
  • Coordinate the receipt of meat products with warehouse and logistics teams to ensure accurate quantities and product freshness.
  • Negotiate to secure the best possible prices while staying informed about current market trends and conditions.
  • Address and resolve any issues that arise with member stores regarding meat suppliers.
  • Review daily meat deliveries, accounts payable documents, and supplier invoices for accuracy.
  • Maintain up-to-date records on the computer for all assigned products.
  • Inspect coolers to assess the quality and rotation of assigned products.
  • Evaluate all promotional sales, A-Maps, E.B.A.'s, and pre-ordered items.
  • Utilize computer systems to generate purchase orders and maintain accurate records for all assigned products.
  • Apply basic mathematical skills to determine required quantities and assess gains and losses from price adjustments.
  • Make informed purchasing decisions on a daily basis.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills when interacting with members and suppliers.
  • Operate office equipment such as calculators, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Comprehend and retain all relevant information regarding products and market conditions.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of the Associated Wholesale Grocers team to fulfill all job responsibilities. Actions must consistently reflect cooperation, integrity, tact, and consideration for our members, colleagues, and management.
  • This role necessitates strong communication and computer skills, along with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Management will be kept updated on planning, analysis, tasks performed, and outcomes. All records required by management must be complete, accurate, and submitted punctually.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To successfully fulfill this role, an individual must be capable of performing each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Experience in retail grocery or grocery wholesale is preferred.

A degree is not mandatory, but equivalent work experience in retail is preferred; a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in grocery retail or wholesale is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including at least 2 years in a management role.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating instructions, and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively before groups of customers or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret various instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Valid Driver's License
