Sustainable Forestry and Natural Resources Advisor (Applied Research and Extension)

University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources

County Locations: Lassen County, Plumas County, Sierra County

Job Overview:

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) presents an exceptional opportunity for a Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Sustainable Forestry and Natural Resources Advisor.

We seek a dedicated professional with experience collaborating with regional and Tribal communities to enhance forest health and resilience against fire. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering partnerships and engaging meaningfully with community stakeholders to address their needs and priorities. UC ANR operates a comprehensive network of researchers and educators focused on developing and applying knowledge to tackle local agricultural, environmental, and health challenges. Our mission is to empower Californians through research, extension, and educational programs that support:
  • Sustainable and nutritious food production
  • Economic viability in a global marketplace
  • A healthy and sustainable environment
  • Scientific literacy and youth development
By working closely with the communities we serve, UC ANR extends the University of California's outreach to ensure equitable access to its resources.

Position Purpose: The Sustainable Forestry & Natural Resources Advisor will lead an extension education and applied research initiative focused on sustainable forest management across both private and public lands in Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen Counties.

The Advisor will provide expertise and leadership in promoting forest sustainability and resilience, addressing critical risks posed by wildfires, climate change, and pest infestations. This role will tackle barriers to active forest management and focus on pressing issues such as forest fuel accumulation, which has contributed to the increasing frequency of severe wildfires. These challenges threaten not only forest ecosystems but also habitat stability, water quality, and community resilience to wildfires. Ongoing drought conditions and rapid climate shifts will exacerbate pest and disease challenges, leading to potential widespread tree mortality.

The Advisor will deliver leadership, information dissemination, and technical assistance to meet the growing demand for economically viable reforestation strategies throughout the service area. This position is part of a collaborative team of Forestry and Natural Resource Advisors operating statewide.

Research, Extension, and Education: The CE area advisor will implement a locally-focused research, extension, and education program to address high-priority issues related to forest resource management and sustainable use of forest resources in the three counties. Key topics include sustainable forest stewardship, fire resilience, post-fire reforestation, water quality management, community education on fire safety, carbon sequestration, invasive species management, pest control, and public awareness initiatives. The advisor will engage with landowners, governmental, and non-governmental organizations to mitigate wildfire risks and manage post-wildfire recovery efforts, enhancing community health through access to research and educational resources.

The area advisor will play a crucial role in addressing significant challenges facing forestry and associated natural resources in Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen Counties. The applied research program will be guided by a needs assessment and may involve partnerships with various campus and county-based colleagues. The CE advisor will design and conduct applied research and demonstration projects that explore questions such as: 1) How do regulatory and economic factors influence forest landowners' ability to manage their lands sustainably? 2) What viable economic opportunities exist for utilizing woody biomass? 3) How can prescribed fire be effectively integrated into vegetation management? 4) In what ways can sustainable forest management enhance water quality and availability?

Collaboration with UC Baker Forest provides a unique opportunity for the advisor to partner with faculty, specialists, the private timber sector, the US Forest Service, and regional NGOs in conducting applied research initiatives. Research findings will be disseminated through ANR publications, professional journals, conference proceedings, newsletters, and other relevant platforms.

County and community partners depend on UC ANR CE advisors as vital resources for delivering research-based information across diverse disciplines. CE advisors utilize various extension methods tailored to meet clientele needs, including individual consultations, presentations, workshops, field demonstrations, and publications.

This role offers a chance to make a significant impact within the target counties and throughout California. The potential for collaborative partnerships that connect consumers and resource professionals with relevant scientific information is extensive. You will join a team of dedicated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and committed to making a difference in California's communities and landscapes.

Counties of Responsibility: This position focuses on Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen Counties, with opportunities for collaborative work across regions.

Reporting Structure: The CE advisor operates under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension Plumas, Sierra, Lassen County Director.
Required Qualifications
Education:
  • A minimum of a Master's degree in forest management, forest ecology, wildland fire science, watershed management, or a closely related field is required by the appointment start date.
Additional Requirements
  • Demonstrated understanding of applied forest management practices.
  • Experience in forest management is essential for passing the California Registered Professional Foresters Licensing examination within five years of appointment.
  • Experience working with Tribal or Indigenous communities is preferred.
  • Background in emergency and disaster planning or related fields.
  • Experience with community-led research and extension methodologies that ensure collaborative research and programming.
  • Ability to engage with diverse clientele across various socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Valid California Driver's License and proof of insurance for vehicle use is required.
Desired Experience
  • Familiarity with Northern California forest conditions and their societal and ecological implications.
  • Additional qualifications in Native American studies or experience with Tribal communities in rural settings is highly desirable.
  • Passion for a career in Cooperative Extension.
  • Experience in partnership building and working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to plan projects, manage teams, and implement applied research and outreach programs with measurable goals.
Skills Required: Successful candidates will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

Technical Competence and Impact:
The candidate must design and implement programs that foster positive community changes and impacts. Advisors are expected to adapt and grow throughout their careers in response to industry and community needs.

Communication:
Excellence in written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills is essential. Public speaking to stakeholders is a routine aspect of this role.

Collaboration, Teamwork, and Flexibility:
Ability to work collaboratively with industry and stakeholders, adapting to changing circumstances as needed.

Lifelong Learning:
Commitment to ongoing self-improvement and adaptability to shifting program focuses.
