Summary:

The Bereavement Care Specialist provides compassionate and evidence-based clinical bereavement support services to grieving families and staff members. This role involves comprehensive assessment of bereavement needs, planning and implementation of grief support services, administration of grief education, and provision of resources.

Bereavement Care Program:

The Bereavement Care Team at Children's Health provides support, resources, and education for grieving patients, families, and staff members. The team consists of a Program Manager and four Bereavement Care Specialists, who conduct individual and group support sessions, plan and implement bereavement programming, and work with the program manager to grow and develop Bereavement Care Services.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement bereavement program initiatives, interventions, procedures, and services offered for patient families, team members, and the community.
  • Collaborate with multiple disciplines and departments to ensure bereaved families are provided services and resources designed to meet their specific needs.
  • Provide assessment, bereavement support, and information to bereaved parents and family members who have experienced the death of a child.
  • Have a deep understanding of subject matter in area(s) of expertise.
  • Plan and facilitate support groups for family members and community.
  • Perform tasks and administrative functions as outlined by the direct supervisor.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of memorial programs.
  • Act as a resource for staff who work with patients at end of life.
  • Serve as a bereavement representative and/or subject-matter expert on hospital-wide initiatives/committees.
  • Evaluate and adapt bereavement programming in collaboration with bereavement program manager.
  • Collaborate with leaders to develop projects; participate in initiatives to share and learn with a variety of audiences.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and sustainability of comprehensive services to support staff of all disciplines experiencing bereavement-related distress.
  • Work effectively with diverse groups across multiple departmental lines and multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, and an understanding of clinical processes.
  • Provide crisis intervention and decedent care support as needed.
  • Participate in departmental committees and projects as assigned.
How You'll Be Successful:

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 5+ years of related experience with specialized bereavement experience required

EDUCATION

  • Graduate or professional work or advanced degree; or equivalent experience required

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Texas State licensed in one of the following: Psychologist, LMSW, LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or board certification as a professional chaplain, music therapist, or child life specialist
