CLASSIFICATION: LIBRARY MEDIA ASSISTANT
PRIMARY ROLE:
Under the guidance of the District Librarian and the oversight of a site principal, this role involves assisting with media-related activities within a school setting. Responsibilities include processing and organizing media materials, as well as aiding students and staff in selecting suitable resources.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the daily operations of the school library media center, including the upkeep and organization of the collection.
- Receive, process, circulate, and shelve both print and digital materials aligned with the school's educational themes.
- Support educators in teaching essential information literacy skills, enabling students to access, utilize, and assess various media to enhance their learning.
- Assist students and educators in finding and selecting appropriate resources; facilitate special projects or storytime sessions as needed.
- Maintain accurate records related to library activities, including circulation statistics and financial transactions.
- Coordinate library media schedules for classes and oversee the work of volunteers and student aides.
- Ensure the library media center remains clean and organized, fostering an environment conducive to learning and literacy.
- Create engaging displays to promote reading and highlight library media initiatives.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Computer systems and automated library management tools.
- Library media center practices, terminology, and procedures.
- Basic recordkeeping and organizational techniques.
- Interpersonal communication skills, demonstrating tact and patience.
ABILITY TO:
- Assist in various library media activities effectively.
- Learn and adapt to the operational policies and procedures of the assigned school library.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and students.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
A combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and at least one year of experience working with students in a structured environment, preferably within a school context. Some positions may require proficiency in a second language (Spanish).
