Position Overview:
The Operating Room Specialist will serve as a crucial member of the surgical team, responsible for ensuring a sterile environment and assisting during surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts surgical scrubs and employs personal protective equipment to establish a sterile setup for various surgical operations.
  • Anticipates the requirements of surgeons, efficiently passes instruments, and provides sterile supplies while adhering to aseptic techniques.
  • May assume the role of circulator under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Implements universal precautions as outlined by health authorities when delivering direct or indirect patient care.
  • Safely transports patients from different hospital units to the operating room, ensuring their comfort and safety.
  • Verifies that patients have received preoperative medications and that all personal items are removed prior to transport.
  • Reviews patient charts and identification for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provides emotional support to patients who may be anxious about surgery.
  • Communicates with family members to offer information and emotional support regarding the patient's condition.
  • Documents all patient care activities and progress in accordance with established medical record standards.
  • Performs a variety of direct patient care tasks, including mobility assistance and patient positioning.
  • Trains and orients new staff and students on operating room procedures and the use of surgical instruments.
  • Monitors patients and reports any concerning findings to prevent complications during surgery.
  • Follows the perioperative nursing care plan to prepare patients and the operating room.
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance and risk management protocols.
  • Participates in the counting of surgical instruments and materials during procedures to maintain accountability.
  • Assists surgeons and anesthesiologists during complex surgical interventions.
  • Prepares and organizes necessary supplies and equipment for specific surgical procedures.
  • Maintains cleanliness and order in the operating room post-surgery, including the proper disposal of contaminated materials.
  • Restocks and replenishes surgical supplies as needed.
  • Conducts basic maintenance on operating room equipment.

Qualifications:
  • Current certification from a recognized surgical technology board.
  • At least one year of experience as a certified surgical technologist within the last three years.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from an accredited organization.
  • Thorough understanding of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and surgical procedures.
  • Ability to circulate a wide range of surgical procedures.
  • Proficient in the processing and sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Physical capability to respond to medical emergencies and assist patients as needed.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require lifting and moving patients safely.
  • Capability to stand for extended periods and operate necessary equipment.
