Under the guidance of the Operating Room Manager or designated authority, the Operating Room Nurse Specialist is tasked with delivering intra-operative patient care in alignment with professional nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and the mission and values of the facility. This role necessitates providing both direct and indirect patient care across various age groups, employing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures.
Administrative duties encompass internal physician relations, cost management, and compliance with staffing protocols. The nurse may supervise other Registered Nurses as needed and guide ancillary personnel within the operating room and central processing areas. Responsibilities also include assisting with administrative functions related to Risk Management, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Clinical Recruitment/Retention. Collaborating with nursing leadership, the Operating Room Nurse may contribute to the formulation and execution of policies and procedures that ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and cost-effective care.
The nurse is expected to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance, safeguarding the confidentiality of patients, colleagues, and facility information while adhering to HIPAA regulations. Any known or suspected violations of laws, regulations, or the facility's Code of Conduct must be reported in good faith. The nurse is also required to fulfill annual continuing education obligations.
Patient Demographics:
The patient demographic served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital includes individuals aged 12 years and older, encompassing adult to geriatric patients who require or seek surgical or pain management interventions.
Physical Demands:
The role may involve lifting up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. The position is of medium physical demand, requiring prolonged walking or standing while on duty. Essential visual and auditory acuity, along with manual dexterity, are necessary for performing designated tasks. The work environment is clean, well-lit, and may expose the nurse to unpleasant sights, odors, stressful situations, limited radiation, hazardous chemicals, or infectious diseases, necessitating sound judgment regarding safety precautions. Variations in climate control and ambient temperature may occur based on patient care needs. Irregular or unexpectedly extended hours may be required.
OSHA Exposure Classification:
Job Category I. Direct exposure to blood or other bodily fluids, necessitating adherence to standard precautions and the use of personal protective equipment. Qualifications:- Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program with current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas.
- BLS & ACLS certification required or to be obtained within 30 days of hire; PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
- A minimum of two years of experience in the Operating Room or a critical care nursing environment is required.
- Familiarity with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the nursing field.
- Knowledge of state, federal, and accrediting body regulations and standards related to healthcare.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English; additional languages are preferred.
- Ability to comprehend written and verbal instructions.
- Commitment to participating in goal-setting and educational activities for personal and professional development.
- Basic computer literacy is required for performing essential job-related duties.
PEOPLE
- Complies with staffing schedules, attendance policies, and collaborates on daily assignments as needed.

- Actively participates in site marking and initiates timeout procedures in accordance with policy.
- Ensures quality clinical care delivery through participation in benchmarking programs.
- Adheres to facility clinical policies and procedures.
- Maintains a safe operating room environment, complying with all patient care safety protocols.
- Reviews and engages in performance improvement initiatives.

FINANCE
