Under the guidance of the OR Manager or designated representative, the Operating Room Registered Nurse is tasked with delivering intra-operative patient care, adhering to established nursing judgment, regulatory standards, and the core values of the organization. This role requires providing both direct and indirect patient care across various age groups, employing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in line with the facility's policies and outpatient surgery center protocols.
Administrative duties encompass internal physician engagement, cost management, and compliance with staffing schedules. The nurse supervises fellow Registered Nurses as needed and oversees ancillary staff within the operating room and central processing. Additionally, this position involves assisting with administrative responsibilities related to Risk Management, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Clinical Recruitment/Retention. Collaborating with nursing leadership, the OR Nurse may also contribute to the formulation and execution of policies and procedures that ensure the delivery of cost-effective, safe, and high-quality care.
Maintaining a professional demeanor and appearance while safeguarding the confidentiality of patients, colleagues, and facility information is crucial. The nurse is expected to report any known or suspected violations of laws, regulations, or the organization's Code of Conduct in good faith. Continuous education requirements must be fulfilled annually.
Patient Demographics:
The patient demographic served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital includes individuals aged 12 years and older, extending to geriatric patients requiring or seeking pain management and/or surgical interventions.
Physical Demands:
May be required to lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. The role involves medium physical demands, including prolonged walking or standing during duty hours. Essential visual and auditory acuity, along with manual dexterity, is necessary for performing designated tasks. The work environment is clean, well-lit, and may involve exposure to unpleasant sights, odors, stressful situations, limited radiation, hazardous chemicals, or infectious diseases, necessitating sound judgment regarding necessary precautions. Variations in climate control and ambient temperature may occur based on patient care and surgical team needs. Irregular or unexpectedly extended hours may be required.
OSHA Exposure Classification:
Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids requiring adherence to standard precautions. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be utilized.Qualifications:
- Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program with valid licensure from the Texas State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
- BLS & ACLS certification required or to be obtained within 30 days of hire; PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
- A minimum of two years of experience in the Operating Room or a critical care nursing environment is required.
- Familiarity with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the nursing field.
- Understanding of state, federal, and accrediting body regulations and standards related to healthcare.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English; knowledge of additional languages is preferred.
- Ability to comprehend written and oral instructions.
- Willingness to engage in goal-setting and educational activities for personal and professional development.
- Basic computer literacy is essential for performing job-related duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:

SERVICE

- Completes pre-operative record reviews and conducts interviews to plan for intra-operative patient needs.
- Actively participates in site marking and initiates timeout procedures according to established policies.
- Ensures quality clinical care delivery through participation in benchmarking programs.
- Adheres to facility clinical policies and procedures.
- Maintains a safe operating room environment, complying with all patient care safety requirements.
- Reviews and engages in performance improvement initiatives.
- Ensures accurate, legible medical record documentation in accordance with federal and accrediting standards.
FINANCE
- Conserves resources and minimizes costs whenever possible.
- Assists in implementing cost-saving initiatives for the department.
- Communicates ideas for cost containment and expense reduction.
- Maintains appropriate staffing levels, ensuring overtime remains below established benchmarks.
- Completes medical record documentation and implant logs accurately for all cases.
