Operating Room Registered Nurse

Essential Qualifications:

Under the guidance of the OR Manager or an appointed representative, the Operating Room Registered Nurse is tasked with delivering intra-operative patient care that aligns with established nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and the mission and values of the facility. This role necessitates providing both direct and indirect patient care across various age groups while employing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with the facility's policies and outpatient surgery protocols.

Administrative duties encompass internal physician engagement, cost management, and compliance with staffing schedules. The nurse may supervise other Registered Nurses as needed and guide ancillary staff within the operating room and central processing areas. Additionally, this position involves assisting with administrative responsibilities related to Risk Management, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Clinical Recruitment/Retention. Collaborating with nursing leadership, the OR Nurse may also contribute to the formulation and execution of policies and procedures that ensure cost-effective, safe, and high-quality care.

Exhibiting a professional demeanor and appearance, the nurse must maintain patient, coworker, and facility confidentiality while adhering to HIPAA regulations. Any known or suspected violations of laws, rules, or the Code of Conduct must be reported in good faith. The nurse is also responsible for fulfilling annual continuing education requirements.

Patient Demographics:

The patient demographic served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital includes individuals aged 12 years and older, extending to geriatric patients requiring pain management or surgical interventions.

Physical Demands:

This role may require lifting up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. The work environment is of medium demand, necessitating frequent walking or standing. Essential visual and auditory acuity, along with manual dexterity, is required for the effective performance of designated duties. The physical setting is clean, well-lit, and may expose the nurse to unpleasant sights, odors, stressful situations, limited radiation, hazardous materials, or infectious diseases, necessitating sound judgment regarding necessary precautions. Variations in climate control and ambient temperature may occur based on patient care needs and surgical team requirements. Irregular or unexpectedly extended hours may be necessary due to job demands.

OSHA Exposure Classification:

Job Category I. Direct exposure to blood or other bodily fluids requiring adherence to standard precautions. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be utilized.

Qualifications:
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program with current and valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas.
  • BLS & ACLS certification required or to be obtained within 30 days of hire; PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the Operating Room or critical care nursing environment is required.
  • Familiarity with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the nursing field.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and accrediting body regulations and standards related to healthcare.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and effectively communicating in English; additional language skills are preferred.
  • Ability to comprehend written and oral instructions.
  • Willingness to engage in goal-setting and educational activities for personal and professional development.
  • Basic computer literacy required for essential job functions.


Duties and Responsibilities:

TEAMWORK

  1. Adheres to staffing schedules and attendance policies while cooperating with daily assignments.
  2. Demonstrates teamwork skills, effectively delegating tasks while supervising ancillary personnel in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating patient care in the operating room according to accepted standards.
  3. Provides direct patient care in clinical settings, showcasing clinical competence.
  4. Participates in the orientation of new staff and peer evaluation processes, ensuring facility morale reflects the mission and values of the center.
  5. Exhibits problem-solving abilities in a timely and constructive manner, maintaining focus on improving situations.
  6. Willingness to mentor others and engage in competency programs.
  7. Completes required training in a timely manner annually.
  8. Participates in departmental and facility staff meetings for informative and educational purposes.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  1. Demonstrates effective communication skills with staff, management, physicians, patients, and family members.
  2. Establishes and maintains exceptional service standards for all customers, including physicians, patients, and employees.
  3. Engages in physician-oriented service teams.
  4. Participates in service recovery by taking ownership of issues and resolving problems, keeping customers informed throughout the process.
  5. Models appropriate interactions with physicians, patients, and staff to ensure high service levels in all responsibilities.
  6. Reviews daily schedules and prepares cases based on preference cards and specific patient care needs.
  7. Communicates necessary changes to preference cards.
  8. Transfers intra-operative care information to PACU staff upon patient transfer.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Initiates physical and psycho/social assessments and pre-operative care plans, ensuring patient identification and informed consent verification.
  2. Completes pre-operative record reviews and conducts interviews to address intra-operative patient needs.
  3. Actively participates in site marking and initiates timeout procedures in accordance with policy.
  4. Ensures quality clinical care delivery through participation in benchmarking programs.
  5. Adheres to facility clinical policies and procedures.
  6. Maintains a safe operating room environment, complying with all patient care safety requirements.
  7. Engages in performance improvement initiatives.
  8. Ensures accurate, legible medical record documentation in compliance with federal and accrediting standards.

COST MANAGEMENT

  1. Conserves resources and minimizes costs where feasible.
  2. Assists in implementing cost-saving initiatives for the department.
  3. Communicates ideas for cost containment and expense reduction.
  4. Maintains appropriate staffing levels and ensures overtime remains below established benchmarks.
  5. Accurately completes medical record documentation and implant logs for all cases.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. Contributes to facility growth through competency and customer service.
  2. Actively participates in Mock Code Drills.
  3. Expands knowledge in the field through seminars and in-services.
  4. Communicates service line development ideas with facility leadership.
  5. Engages in customer service discussions with physicians to support facility marketing initiatives.
Education Required:
  • Associate's degree or higher in Nursing.
