Operating Room Registered Nurse Position

Core Competencies:

Under the guidance of the Operating Room Manager or their appointed delegate, the Operating Room Registered Nurse is tasked with delivering patient care during surgical procedures, adhering to established nursing practices, regulatory guidelines, and the mission and values of the organization. This role encompasses both direct and indirect patient care across various age groups, employing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in line with the facility's protocols and outpatient surgical standards.

Administrative duties include promoting physician engagement, maintaining cost efficiency, and ensuring compliance with staffing schedules. The nurse may oversee other Registered Nurses as needed and provide direction to support staff within the operating room and central processing areas. Additionally, the role involves assisting with administrative responsibilities related to Risk Management, Infection Control, Performance Improvement, and Clinical Recruitment/Retention. Collaborating with nursing leadership, the Operating Room Nurse may also contribute to the development and execution of policies and procedures that ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality care.

Maintaining a professional demeanor and appearance is essential, alongside the commitment to patient confidentiality, coworker respect, and adherence to HIPAA regulations. The nurse is expected to report any suspected violations of laws, regulations, or ethical standards in good faith. Continuing education requirements must be fulfilled annually.

Patient Demographics:

The patient demographic served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital includes individuals aged 12 years and older, extending to geriatric patients requiring surgical interventions or pain management.

Physical Demands:

Physical requirements may include lifting up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. The role involves medium physical demand, with a significant amount of walking or standing during shifts. Essential visual and auditory acuity, along with manual dexterity, is required for the operation of medical equipment and instruments. The work environment is typically clean, well-lit, and may involve exposure to unpleasant sights, odors, and stressful situations. Adherence to safety protocols is crucial, particularly in managing hazardous materials or infectious diseases. Irregular hours and unexpected extensions of duty may occur based on operational needs.

OSHA Exposure Classification:

Job Category I. Direct exposure to blood or bodily fluids, necessitating adherence to standard precautions and the use of personal protective equipment.

Qualifications:
  • Eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Texas.
  • BLS & ACLS certifications required within 30 days of hire; PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in an Operating Room or critical care nursing setting.
  • Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in the healthcare field.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations and standards governing healthcare.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English; additional languages are a plus.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Willingness to engage in professional development and educational opportunities.
  • Basic computer literacy required for job-related tasks.


Responsibilities:

TEAMWORK

  1. Adheres to staffing schedules and attendance policies while cooperating with daily assignments.
  2. Exhibits teamwork skills, demonstrating effective delegation and supervision of support personnel in patient care planning and execution.
  3. Provides direct patient care in clinical settings, showcasing clinical proficiency.

  6. Reviews daily schedules and prepares cases based on preference cards and patient needs.
  7. Communicates necessary changes to preference cards.
  8. Transfers intra-operative care information to PACU staff upon patient transfer.

  1. Initiates patient assessments and pre-operative care planning, ensuring informed consent is verified.
  2. Conducts pre-operative record reviews and interviews to address intra-operative needs.
  3. Actively participates in site marking and timeout procedures as per policy.
  4. Ensures quality clinical care through participation in benchmarking initiatives.
  5. Adheres to facility clinical policies and procedures.
  6. Maintains a safe operating room environment, complying with all patient safety protocols.
  7. Engages in performance improvement initiatives.
  8. Ensures accurate and legible medical record documentation in compliance with federal and accrediting standards.

COST MANAGEMENT

  1. Conserves resources and minimizes costs whenever feasible.
  2. Assists in implementing cost-saving measures within the department.
  3. Communicates ideas for cost containment and expense reduction.
  4. Maintains appropriate staffing levels and minimizes overtime in accordance with benchmarks.
  5. Ensures accurate completion of medical records and implant logs for all cases.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. Contributes to facility growth through competency and customer service excellence.
  2. Actively participates in emergency drills and training.
  3. Engages in ongoing education within the field (seminars, in-services).
  4. Communicates service line development ideas with leadership.
  5. Engages in customer service discussions with physicians to support facility marketing efforts.
