Position Overview
The role involves evaluating and identifying patients at risk of malnutrition before and after organ transplants and other abdominal procedures. The professional will provide education to both staff and patients on nutrition-related subjects and organ transplantation. Documentation will be maintained in accordance with departmental policies and regulatory standards. Adherence to practice standards aligned with departmental and hospital protocols is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct assessments, collaborate with healthcare teams, recommend, and deliver tailored nutrition care for patients during pre-transplant evaluations and throughout recovery phases following organ transplants or abdominal surgeries, as well as during the management of liver diseases in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients regarding nutrition in relation to chronic and end-stage organ failure, organ transplantation, and the prevention and management of related chronic conditions.
  • Evaluate, collaborate, recommend implementation, and monitor nutritional support including hyperalimentation, enteral feeding, and oral supplementation for individual patients.
  • Offer nutrition-related information and technical support to healthcare teams.
  • Engage in community outreach initiatives focused on organ donation and transplant awareness.
  • Participate in marketing efforts for the transplant program; develop and update educational materials related to nutrition for patients, as well as nutrition content for relevant publications.
Management Responsibilities
This position does not include management duties and will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Qualifications
  • Education - A Bachelor's degree from an accredited Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics institution and/or completion of an approved internship program.
  • Experience - Previous experience is not mandatory; however, experience in inpatient, outpatient, or community healthcare settings is preferred.
Certifications and Licenses
  • Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Valid Dietetics License in South Carolina.
Skills and Competencies
  • Commitment to maintaining 75 hours of continuing education every five years.
  • Ability to interpret data, educate, communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals, manage numerical data, and document in medical records.
  • Familiarity with standards set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Joint Commission, Department of Health and Environmental Control, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is preferred.
