About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as an International Student and Scholar Advisor. This is a critical role that requires a deep understanding of immigration policies and procedures, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advising and Support: Provide expert advice and support to international students, scholars, and employees on immigration-related matters, including visa sponsorship, travel, and employment.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure adherence to U.S. federal regulations, UMass Amherst campus policies, and institutional guidelines related to international student and scholar immigration sponsorship.
  • Communication and Outreach: Serve as a liaison with government agencies, including the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Labor, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to facilitate initial immigration sponsorship and maintenance of status.
  • Policy Development and Implementation: Collaborate with the Director and other IPO staff members to develop and implement internal policies, procedures, and business practices related to the UMass Amherst international population.
  • Training and Orientation: Design and deliver training programs and orientation sessions for international students, scholars, and employees on immigration-related topics and UMass Amherst policies and procedures.
  • Professional Development: Stay up-to-date with regulatory changes and best practices in immigration compliance, and participate in professional development activities and meetings of peer international education associations and organizations.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and more than two years' experience working in an educational setting as an advisor or program administrator.
  • U.S. Federal Regulations: Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident to comply with SEVIS regulations.
  • Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated interest in immigration policy and working with a diverse international clientele; ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing demands and priorities; excellent customer service, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Immigration Experience: Prior direct experience working in academic immigration-related positions.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong knowledge of regulations and processes pertaining to student and scholar immigration (F-1 and J-1 visa categories) and employment-based immigration classifications.
  • Master's Degree: Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Language Skills: Knowledge of foreign languages.
