Position Overview

The Senior Accountant will operate under the direct supervision of the Chief Financial Officer. This role entails overseeing the general accounting and financial operations of Vital Voices in conjunction with our outsourced accounting services team. A robust understanding of accounting principles is essential, including preparation of Form 990, audit processes, reconciliations, general accounting, credit card expense reports, payroll, and accounts payable. This position offers a hybrid work schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit Form 990 and other necessary tax filings in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Assist in audit preparations by gathering supporting documentation, performing reconciliations, and providing necessary explanations to auditors.
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and financial statements to ensure accuracy.
  • Perform annual NICRA calculations and submit required documentation as per organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Oversee general accounting tasks, including journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Manage the credit card expense reporting process, ensuring timely submission and reconciliation of employee expense reports.
  • Review and process semi-monthly payroll, ensuring accuracy in pay rates, deductions, and employee reimbursements.
  • Assist in annual budget preparation, including creating templates and entering data into the general ledger system.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors to process accounts payable transactions, including invoice verification and payment processing.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to management to support strategic planning.
  • Work with other departments to address financial inquiries and general questions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required; CPA designation is preferred, along with 4-8 years of relevant experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including Form 990 preparation and audit compliance.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to a dynamic work environment with tight deadlines.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), database software (e.g., Salesforce), financial systems (Sage Intacct, Planning Maestro), HRIS systems (Paylocity), and project management tools (Asana).
  • Experience in cross-functional collaboration to achieve key objectives.
This is a full-time, exempt hybrid position based in Washington, DC, requiring in-person attendance at the Vital Voices Headquarters on designated days.
