Providence, Rhode Island, United States Rhode Island School of Design Full time
Position Overview

The Rhode Island School of Design is in search of a Bilingual Education Consultant to become a vital part of its Center for Arts & Language (A&L). This role is designed for a language education expert who will primarily focus on supporting RISD's diverse international and multilingual student population. A&L is dedicated to enhancing students' language skills and effectiveness through peer tutoring in various forms of communication, guidance for multilingual learners, and a wide array of workshops and digital resources. A&L fosters an environment where all languages are embraced and champions the narratives of artists and designers, encouraging significant contributions to academic, community, and public discussions.

The Bilingual Education Consultant will deliver academic and English-language assistance, instruction, and guidance to RISD's multilingual learners by designing and implementing personalized tutoring sessions in writing, speaking, and reading; leading co-curricular workshops; and providing online resources such as topic-specific handouts and structured learning modules. This position aligns with broader institutional objectives, including evaluating the English-language proficiency of applicants and students, as well as gathering and analyzing comparative data on the learning experiences of multilingual students in relation to various support pathways. The individual in this role will collaborate with a team of professional staff and tutors within the Center for Arts & Language (A&L) to advance RISD's strategic goals aimed at enhancing learning support systems to address both current and emerging needs, particularly in multilingual education, peer tutoring, and professional writing support across the curriculum. Together with the Associate Director, the consultant will act as a knowledgeable, critical, and asset-focused advocate for cultural and linguistic diversity, actively sharing insights with community members, including A&L tutors and faculty, to promote a deeper understanding and practice of teaching and learning within a multilingual educational framework.

As an employer, RISD provides a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive work atmosphere, along with a competitive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer continuous instruction and guidance for selected students requiring sustained support, emphasizing goal-setting, skill enhancement, learning outcomes, and accountability.
  • Facilitate co-curricular and in-class workshops on a variety of subjects related to academic skills, art and design language, and conversational English throughout the academic year.
  • Conduct assessments of English-language proficiency as necessary, including collaboration with Admissions for select graduate program candidates, as well as occasional evaluations of enrolled students.
  • Gather and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data regarding the learning experiences of multilingual students.
  • Support the holistic education of peer tutors by developing training materials and providing guidance for Arts & Language peer tutors in their efforts to assist multilingual students.
  • Engage in outreach activities, including classroom visits and orientation presentations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and certification in TESOL or a Master's degree in TESOL, linguistics, bilingual education, or a related field, along with a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching English at the collegiate level.
  • Experience in teaching and/or advising multilingual students, either as an instructor or within a writing center or advising office in higher education.
  • Proficiency in college-level academic writing and understanding of rhetorical expectations.
  • Awareness of intercultural competence and language justice within the context of higher education.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to follow-through.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience living and working in an international context.
  • Knowledge of art and design practices, education, history, theory, and terminology.
