Position Overview:
The Cultural Resources GIS Analyst plays a pivotal role in the strategic planning, design, development, execution, and upkeep of GIS data tailored to meet the specifications of diverse projects as directed by project managers serving both public and private sectors. Proficiency in ESRI's software suite is essential for candidates.

Key Responsibilities:
This role is integral to enhancing digital data management initiatives, contributing to the development of environmental data layers, data dictionaries, and field collection guides for electronic data acquisition. Responsibilities include:

  • Creating maps for project plans, management summaries, technical documentation, and other deliverables.
  • Acquiring Class I data from State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) and relevant agencies.
  • Compiling data packages for submissions to agencies/SHPOs.
  • Preparing GIS layers to assist field teams.
  • Supporting quality assurance and data validation of incoming field data.
  • Providing feedback on data collection to field teams.
  • Acting as a liaison between field teams and cultural management.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on data collection tools and functionalities.
  • Collaborating with clients, Department of Defense partners, and project GIS teams for cultural requests.
  • Addressing ad hoc GIS/mapping/data management inquiries from project leads.
  • Producing GIS outputs and developing surveys utilizing Survey 123 and/or FieldMaps.
  • Creating cultural resources data layers for various environmental aspects, including field surveys and construction monitoring.
  • Transforming existing environmental data to align with new data layers.
  • Maintaining and enhancing procedures for data collection, processing, and storage.
  • Engaging with clients and project teams to clarify data requirements and project objectives.
  • Managing GIS projects involving vector, raster, and tabular data.
  • Overseeing the creation of reports, presentations, maps, and models for a range of environmental and cultural resource projects.
  • Conducting quality control on database attributes.
  • Operating and maintaining GIS system hardware and software as necessary.
  • Providing geospatial technical support.
  • Mentoring staff and clients in ESRI ArcGIS software and data management practices.
  • Occasionally deploying to the field to assist with operational tasks.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To excel in this position, candidates must demonstrate the following:

  • Preferred experience in complex database management.
  • A strong work ethic coupled with effective problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to adhere to tight deadlines.
  • A valid driver's license in good standing.

Education & Experience:
Candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • An Associate's degree or formal training in GIS or related disciplines, such as cartography or geography, combined with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Previous GIS project experience focusing on cultural resource assessments, monitoring, and field data collection is highly desirable.

Physical Demands:
This position primarily involves office work, with occasional field support required for surveys or other operations.

Work Environment:
This role is primarily remote, with occasional field deployments and project management meetings.

Language & Communication Skills:
Effective oral and written communication skills are essential. Fluency in English is required, including proficiency in report writing for various projects.

Other Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and knowledge of Microsoft Power BI is necessary.

This position requires U.S. citizenship due to project requirements.
