Position Overview:
The Cultural Heritage GIS Specialist is tasked with the strategic planning, design, development, execution, and upkeep of GIS datasets in alignment with the specifications of various projects assigned by project leaders serving both public and private sector clients. Proficiency in ESRI's software suite is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
This role is pivotal in enhancing digital data management efforts, contributing to the creation of environmental data layers, data dictionaries, and field collection protocols for electronic data gathering. Responsibilities include:

  • Creating maps for project plans, management summaries, technical documentation, and other outputs.
  • Acquiring Class I data from State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) and relevant agencies.
  • Compiling data packages for submissions to agencies/SHPOs.
  • Developing GIS layers to assist field teams.
  • Ensuring quality assurance and data cleansing of incoming field data.
  • Providing constructive feedback on data collection to field teams.
  • Acting as a liaison between field teams and cultural resource management.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on data collection tools and their functionalities.
  • Collaborating with clients, Department of Defense partners, and project GIS teams for cultural resource requests.
  • Addressing ad hoc GIS/mapping/data management requests from project leads.
  • Producing GIS outputs and designing surveys using Survey 123 and/or FieldMaps.
  • Creating cultural resource data layers for various environmental aspects, including field surveys and construction oversight.
  • Transforming existing environmental data to align with new data layers.
  • Refining procedures for data collection, processing, and storage.
  • Engaging with clients and project teams to determine data requirements and project objectives.
  • Developing GIS projects encompassing vector, raster, and tabular data.
  • Overseeing the creation of reports, presentations, maps, and models for diverse environmental and cultural resource initiatives.
  • Conducting quality control on database attributes.
  • Operating and maintaining GIS system hardware and software as needed.
  • Providing geospatial technical assistance.
  • Mentoring staff and clients in ESRI ArcGIS software, digital data collection, and data management.
  • Occasionally supporting field operations.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Preferred experience in complex database management.
  • Strong work ethic coupled with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to adhere to tight deadlines.
  • A valid driver's license in good standing.

Education & Experience:
Applicants should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
  • An Associate's degree or formal training in GIS or a related field such as cartography, geography, geomatics, or surveying, along with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Previous GIS project experience focused on cultural resource assessments, surveys, monitoring, and field data collection is highly desirable.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands of this position are primarily office-based, with occasional fieldwork required to support survey operations.

Work Environment:
This position is primarily remote, with occasional field deployments and project management meetings.

Language & Communication Skills:
Effective oral and written communication skills are essential. Fluency in English, including reading, speaking, and writing, is required.

Technical Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is necessary, along with knowledge of Microsoft Power BI.

Citizenship Requirement:
This position requires U.S. citizenship due to the nature of the projects involved.
