Tetra Tech, a leading environmental consulting firm, is seeking a highly skilled Archaeological Field Specialist to join our team. As an Archaeological Field Specialist, you will play a critical role in conducting archaeological monitoring and cultural resource management activities for our Federal NEPA, NHPA, and Environmental Compliance team.
Key Responsibilities- Support Federal projects by serving as an archaeological monitor and key point of contact for clients and contractors in the field.
- Conduct monitoring activities in conjunction with approved work plans, health and safety plans, and all Standard Operating Procedures established for a project.
- Collect monitoring field data such as field notes, site forms, photographs, GPS data, and daily progress reports.
- Coordinate closely with members of interdisciplinary teams deployed in the field such as biologists, UXO removal technicians, environmental compliance inspectors, construction contractors, and federal liaisons.
- Communicate regularly with project management and Principal Investigator regarding field operations and monitoring activities.
- Exercise the right to stop ground disturbing activities in the event of a post-review archaeological discovery and follow the appropriate conservation measures established in approved work plans.
- Document all archaeological, historical, or cultural resources recovered during ground disturbing activities.
- Compile field data sufficient to furnish technical reports compliant with state and federal requirements.
- Work independently to manage assignments, field schedules, field reporting, and project correspondence.
- Work with clients, State Historic Preservation Offices, Tribal Historic Preservation offices, and other stakeholders to meet Section 106 compliance requirements.
- Support technical writing, data management, and other assignments as needed by the Principal Investigator.
- Provide subject matter expertise and technical guidance to team members in support of their functions.
- Provide cultural resources awareness training to members of interdisciplinary teams deployed in the field.
- Must meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) Professional Qualifications in Archaeology.
- Ability to identify, record, and analyze archaeological artifacts, features, and sites in-field and through GIS.
- Ability to interpret and synthesize archaeological and historical data to furnish reporting under Section 106 review and NEPA assessment.
- High proficiency with technical writing to support environmental compliance contracts.
- Proficiency with electronic devices, ESRI ArcPro, and office software.
- In-depth knowledge of the requirements for archaeological project execution including data collection methodology, technical reporting, and regulatory compliance.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and/or local regulations and statutes.
- The ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures in remote locations, perform shovel testing and excavation, and traverse up to 10 miles a day in varied terrain.
- Willingness to deploy for extended field mobilizations up to two months in duration.
- Willingness to travel to project locations throughout varied regions of the United States and the South Pacific islands.
- Familiarity with DoD other Federal and State plans and processes highly desired.
- Master's Degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a closely related field.
- Must have attended an archaeological field school and have at least two years of cultural resource management experience in the United States.
- Archaeological experience in other U.S. regions also valued.
- Prior experience serving as archaeological monitor highly desired.
- Direct experience with federal and state agencies cultural resource regulations is highly desired.
- Direct experience with DoD Section 106 compliance; previous work with SHPOs and THPOs highly desired.
