Building Code Compliance Officer

The City of Anniston is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Inspector to join our team. As a Technical Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with building codes, ordinances, and regulations in our community.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct thorough inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
- Review and verify contractor licenses and project plans to ensure compliance with code requirements.
- Research property tax records and verify ownership information as needed.
- Perform and assist in the performance of construction plan reviews and communicate plan deficiencies to plan review team members and design professionals.
- Issue and assist with the issuance of Stop Work Orders when work has been or is being performed contrary to construction code requirements.
- Enforce provisions of the Anniston Zoning Ordinance, Anniston Alabama Code of Ordinances, Anniston Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, and Anniston Subdivision Regulations.
- Prepare letters, emails, written reports, and logs in a clear and concise manner.
- Participate in meetings with citizens, design professionals, contractors, subcontractors, developers, and other stakeholders as needed.
- Attend meetings of and provide assistance to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments, Historical Commission, Building Code Board of Appeals and Adjustments, and other Boards as needed.
- Enforce laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to state and federal boards and agencies and notify them of violators of their respective laws, rules, and regulations.
- Present testimony in a court of law when required.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED.
- Licensed as an Electrical Contractor by the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board, or licensed as a Master Plumber by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board, or licensed as an HVAC Contractor by the Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors, or five (5) years verifiable experience in the enforcement of construction technical codes, or five (5) years verifiable experience in a managerial role in the electrical, plumbing, or mechanical trades.
- Possession of or ability to become certified within one (1) year of employment as an International Code Council (ICC) Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector, and as both an ICC Residential and Commercial Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, or Mechanical Inspector.
- Maintain a valid Alabama driver's license and all ICC certifications throughout employment.
- Knowledge of structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes, theories, and practical applications.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret blueprints, technical specifications, bulletins, codes, ordinances, flood maps, etc.
- Ability to explain and discuss codes, ordinances, and procedures to individuals and groups.
- Possess writing skills to accurately complete records, reports, and letters using correct punctuation and grammar.
- Math skills to calculate basic geometric and algebraic problems.
- Possess basic computer skills to include proficient usage of internet, word processing software, and spreadsheet software.
